GAO: VA Should Improve Schedule, Cost Estimates for Financial Management Tech Modernization Effort

The Government Accountability Office (GAO) has recommended that the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) initiate steps to come up with reliable cost and schedule estimates for the Financial Management Business Transformation (FMBT) program using best practices outlined in GAO’s cost estimating and schedule assessment guides. The FMBT initiative seeks to replace VA’s aging financial and acquisition systems with a single integrated platform.

NASA Inspector General Office Presents Estimated COVID-19 Cost Impacts on Major Programs

The office of the inspector general at NASA has issued a report saying it estimates the costs of facility closures, delays and other challenges facing the space agency as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic to reach nearly $3 billion. OIG said Wednesday 30 major programs and projects accounted for about $1.6 billion of the estimated total cost impact.

Pentagon Increases Major Defense Procurement Cost Estimate to $2T

The Department of Defense’s cost estimates for the acquisition of major weapons platforms climbed from $1.92T in 2017 to $2T in 2018 covering 87 programs. According to the annual Selected Acquisition Reports, the total program costs for DoD rose by 4 percent to $624.1B driven by the F-35 program. The total acquisition cost of the program jumped by $15.3B in base year 2012 dollars.
