Fleet Cyber Command’s Civilian Employees Offered Transition to Navy’s Enterprise Cyber Service

Employees under the U.S. Fleet Cyber Command’s General Schedule unit may opt to shift their duties to the Department of the Navy’s Cyber Excepted Service through August 18th, the Navy said Wednesday. Congress authorized the Department of Defense to create the enterprise-wide CES personnel system in 2016 to improve the management of civilian cyber personnel.

Gene Dodaro: GAO Considers Cybersecurity a Top Priority for FY 2020

Gene Dodaro, U.S. comptroller general and head of the Government Accountability Office, said during a Senate subcommittee hearing that one of GAO’s priorities in fiscal year 2020 is cybersecurity, Federal News Network reported Friday. He said GAO expanded its cyber workforce from 140 to 175 employees this year and needs more resources to meet lawmaker requests around cybersecurity.

FBI’s Christopher Wray Talks Data Analysis, Cyber Training at Budget Hearing

FBI Director Christopher Wray appeared before the House Appropriations Committee’s commerce, justice, science and related agencies subpanel to discuss the bureau’s budget request, FCW reported Thursday. According to budget documents, the bureau seeks $70.5 million in additional funds to build up cyber tools and data-sharing abilities as well as hire 33 additional employees.

Dana Deasy Talks DoD’s Cloud, Cyber, AI Strategies at House Hearing

Dana Deasy, chief information officer for the Department of Defense, testified before the House Armed Services Committee’s intelligence, emerging threats and capabilities subpanel on the Pentagon’s ongoing digital modernization efforts, the DoD website reported Tuesday.“DOD will remain a multicloud environment, with both general-purpose and fit-for-purpose clouds as part of our long-term strategy,” Deasy said on Tuesday.

House Lawmakers Boosting AI, Cyber Workforce in Gov’t, Industry in 2019

House lawmakers announced plans to improve the use of artificial intelligence and increase the government’s cyber workforce through new bills in 2019 that would provide funding and set standards in the public and private sectors, Federal News Network reported Monday. Reps. Will Hurd, R-Texas, and Robin Kelly, D-Ill., said they want to increase coordination between the government and industry to explore and expand investments in AI technologies.

Jeanette Manfra: DHS Aims to Strengthen Cyber Workforce

Jeanette Manfra, a cybersecurity official at the Department of Homeland Security, told Federal News Network in an interview published Tuesday that DHS prioritizes efforts to build up its cyber workforce through education. Manfra, assistant secretary for the national protection and programs directorate at DHS’ office of cybersecurity and communications, said her office will assess this month whether personnel need to undergo the Federal Virtual Training Environment and other courses.
