IRS Needs Boost in Cybersecurity to Protect Taxpayer Data

The Government Accountability Office called on Congress to expand the authority of the Internal Revenue Service to monitor and coordinate third-party providers to secure sensitive financial and taxpayer information more effectively against cyber threats. Federal IT Heads See Retention a Key Priority for Cyber Workforce

Despite providing training and implementing new approaches to prepare federal employees to take on cybersecurity roles, the government continues to face challenges building and retaining its cyber workforce, FCW reported Thursday. Information technology officials from different agencies raised concerns with the effectiveness of the new cyber workforce executive order. "What I'm not sure how much will get addressed with the executive order is, what about retention?" Shane Barney, chief information security officer of the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, said at a recent Government CIO conference.

Army Evaluating Multidomain Task Force’s Potential Impact to Acquisition

Mark Esper, secretary of the U.S. Army and 2019 Wash100 Award recipient, said the service is still assessing how its multi-domain task force operations will affect procurement procedures during a recent Brookings Institute event, FCW reported Wednesday. Esper noted changes to the task force’s structure are possible but there is no definite schedule for the release of the Army’s updated Multidomain Operations Plan Strategy.

Labor Dept Integrates New Tool for Cyber Risk Monitoring

The Department of Labor will integrate a new algorithm into its continuous monitoring dashboard to identify and track vulnerabilities of the agency’s information technology assets, FedScoop reported Friday. The new Agency-Wide Adaptive Risk Enumeration tool was built under the Continuous Diagnostics and Mitigation program to monitor millions of assets across the entire federal government.

Air Force Delivers ‘Unified Platform’ Increment 1 to Cybercom

Department of Defense officials said the U.S. Air Force developed the first iteration of a cyber platform designed to help cyber forces perform mission planning, share information and deliver command-and-control systems to support cyber missions, Fifth Domain reported Monday. A spokesman for the Air Force said the service handed over to U.S. Cyber Command the first increment of the Unified Platform April 9. Increment 1 features capabilities for interoperability and defensive cyber operations.

Air Force Creating New Information Warfare Org; Ted Uchida Quoted

Some Air Force officials said that establishing a new information warfare organization looks to demonstrate the significance of electronic warfare and cyber capabilities, C4ISRNET reported Monday. “We’ve come to discover cyber is an element of the larger information warfare and [electromagnetic spectrum] fight that we’re in,” Ted Uchida, deputy director of operations at Air Combat Command, said Thursday at an Air Force Association event.

President Trump Nominates Air Force Gen. John Hyten as Joint Chiefs of Staff Vice Chairman

President Trump nominated Air Force Gen. John Hyten, commander of U.S. Strategic Command, to serve as vice chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. Acting Defense Secretary and 2019 Wash100 Award winner Patrick Shanahan announced Hyten’s nomination in a news release published Tuesday. Hyten started his military career in 1981 and held several leadership roles with the Air Force, including head of Air Force Space Command, director of space acquisition and cyber and space operations and requirements chief at Headquarters Air Force Space Command.

Air Combat Command Intending to Integrate Cyber, ISR Ops Through 24th, 25th Air Forces Merger

Air Combat Command will combine this summer its 24th and 25th air forces to integrate cyber, electronic warfare, information operations and intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance activities at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland in Texas, the Air Force reported Thursday. “The merger of 24th and 25th is the next step in leveraging and integrating new ideas and technologies to both improve the quality and speed of decision-making and deliver improved effects for commanders,” said Gen. Mike Holmes, commander of Air Combat Command.
