OPM Experiences Data Center Outage as Administration Pursues GSA Merger

The Office of Personnel Management experienced a disruption to its information technology systems due to a data center outage at OPM’s headquarters last week, Federal News Network reported Tuesday. “Significant OPM programs and missions were impacted for multiple hours last week during an incident that impacted OPM information technology,” Stephen Billy, deputy chief of staff at OPM, told the publication.

OMB Issues Updated Data Center Optimization Initiative

The Office of Management and Budget released an updated Data Center Optimization Initiative to better comply with the Federal Information Technology Acquisition Reform Act’s data center consolidation requirements. The revised DCOI establishes metrics and goals for data center optimization and defines requirements for agencies’ progress reports ahead of FITARA’s Oct. 1, 2020 deadline for consolidation.

GAO Finds Slow Development in OMB’s Data Center Optimization Initiative

The Government Accountability Office issued a report highlighting the slow progress in the Office of Management and Budget's Data Center Optimization Initiative. GAO said Thursday that of the 24 agencies participating in the program, 11 did not create a plan to meet their goals to close or improve data centers in 2018. OMB required agencies to complete efforts under DCOI in September 2018.

PSC Outlines Recommendations for Proposed Update to Data Center Optimization Initiative

The Professional Services Council has sent to the Office of Management and Budget its recommendations for the agency's proposed update to the Data Center Optimization Initiative. In a Dec. 26 letter to Federal Chief Information Officer Suzette Kent, PSC listed 20 recommendations such as including a vision statement to establish the DCOI policy’s purpose and aligning the policy with the 2017 Federal IT Modernization Report.

Rory Kinney: DoD to Consolidate Networks of ‘Fourth Estate’ Agencies

Rory Kinney, acting deputy chief information officer for information enterprise at the Department of Defense, has said DoD plans to reduce the number of networks run by “fourth estate” agencies to a single secret network and one unclassified network, Federal News Network reported Thursday. The fourth estate includes 28 Pentagon agencies, which are not part of the service branches and run on 34 various networks.

Suzette Kent Issues Draft Memo on OMB’s Updated Data Center Optimization Initiative

The Office of Management and Budget has updated the Data Center Optimization Initiative after Congress passed a measure that extends agencies' compliance with the Federal Information Technology Acquisition Reform Act’s data center consolidation requirements through Oct. 1, 2020. Suzette Kent, federal chief information officer, said in a draft memorandum published Monday OMB decided to revise DCOI in accordance with the FITARA Enhancement Act of 2017.
