DoD Deploying Enterprise File Exchange Service for Unclassified Data

The Defense Information Systems Agency is implementing a new file exchange system to enable Department of Defense users to securely exchange unclassified data on an enterprise level. DISA said Thursday that the open-source DoD Secure Access File Exchange will succeed the Army Aviation and Missile Research Development and Engineering Center’s SAFE service slated to retire this month.

GAO Reports on IRS Information Security

The Government Accountability Office has reviewed the Internal Revenue Service's data security and discovered 14 new vulnerabilities. GAO said Thursday that it evaluated IRS' information security controls in fiscal year 2018 and recommends the revenue agency to bolster protection of financial and taxpayer information.

Industry Group Urging Gov’t to Launch Efforts in Identity Mgmt Tech

Industry senior leaders recommend government entities promote the use of next-generation identity, credential and access management capabilities instead of traditional password-based authenticators, Fedscoop reported Thursday. Matt Lira, special assistant to the president at the White House Office of American Innovation, told audiences at a Business Roundtable event in Washintgon, D.C. that the government has “a major role to play” in rolling out advanced ICAM technologies to modernize digital identity procedures.

Report: NSA Failed to Comply With Contracting, Data Security Regulations

The National Security Agency’s Office of the Inspector General released a report stating that the agency didn’t properly handle its contracting procedures and signals intelligence data repository. The report, which consolidates audits from October 2018 to March 2019, also found that there’s “room for improvement” in eight information technology security areas.

Pentagon Plans to Implement Cyber Standards for Contractors

The Department of Defense intends to implement new cybersecurity standards for government contractors by January 2020, FedScoop reported Friday. DoD will work with the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory and Carnegie Mellon University Software Engineering Institute to develop the proposed standards - Cybersecurity Maturity Model Certification.

DHS Warns of Data Security Risk Associated With Chinese-Made Drones

The Department of Homeland Security issued an alert saying Chinese-built drones may be transmitting to manufacturers sensitive flight information that could be accessed by the Chinese government, CNN reported Monday. The drones "contain components that can compromise your data and share your information on a server accessed beyond the company itself,” the DHS’ Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency said in the alert obtained by CNN.
