Stoney Trent: Incentives Key to Driving Industry Participation in DoD’s AI Efforts

Col. Stoney Trent, chief of operations at the Department of Defense’s Joint Artificial Intelligence Center, said that commercial entities are “poorly incentivized” to conduct AI development and testing during a recent C4ISRNET conference, C4ISRNET reported Sunday. Trent noted that the DoD needs to encourage private sector partners to develop better AI testing tools and methods that can be used in potential activities relevant to national security.

DIU Accelerating Satcom, Space Tech Contract Awards

Col. Steve Butow, space portfolio director for the Defense Innovation Unit, said that the recently established agency is looking to issue its first contract award within 60 days, Space News reported Tuesday. “At DIU, we don’t like to pick winners, we build menus. Sometimes we get two solutions that are quite unique and we want both of them,” he noted during this year's Space Tech Expo in Pasadena, Calif.

James Murray Appointed Secret Service Director

James Murray, assistant director of the office of protective operations at the U.S. Secret Service, was named director of the federal law enforcement agency. The move will take effect in May. He will succeed Randolph “Tex” Alles, a retired Marine Corps major general who took the helm of the agency in April 2017, the Secret Service said in a statement released Monday.
