CISA Director Chris Krebs: 2020 Elections Need Paper Ballots

Chris Krebs, director of the Department of Homeland Security's Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency and 2019 Wash100 Award recipient, spoke about the importance of backup paper ballots for the upcoming 2020 elections, CNN reported Friday. The paper ballot backups are necessary to perform audits that information technology is not capable of, he said during the DEFCON cyber conference that took place from Aug. 8 to 11.

Rep. Will Hurd Won’t Seek Re-Election

Rep. Will Hurd (R-Texas) announced that he will not run for re-election in 2020 “in order to pursue opportunities outside the halls of Congress to solve problems at the nexus between technology and national security.” Hurd, a 2019 Wash100 Award recipient, wrote in an editorial published Thursday about the “generational challenges” facing the U.S., including the geopolitical competition with China, the increasing incidents of cyber attacks and competition for leadership in the field of artificial intelligence.

Senate OKs $2.7T Budget Deal With Defense Spending Increase Over Two Years

The Senate voted 67-28 to pass a two-year budget deal to increase defense spending by approximately $45B, Defense News reported Thursday. The $2.7T deal would raise defense funding from spending levels of $716B to $738B in 2020 to $740B in 2021. It also includes an agreement to exclude “poison pill” riders that limit the administration’s ability to direct funds toward the border wall project.

The National Security Commission on Artificial Intelligence provided updates on its activities and future plans to advance AI development through its initial congressional report, National Defense reported Wednesday. According to the report released Wednesday, the commissioners decided to group themselves into four working teams focused on four key areas, including maintaining U.S. leadership in AI research and keeping the country’s advantage in AI national security applications.
