Robert Work on DoD’s Use of AI in Weapons Development

Robert Work, former deputy secretary at the Department of Defense, said DoD is “absolutely unapologetic” about efforts to advance the development of artificial intelligence-based weapons, Nextgov reported Wednesday. “If we’re going to succeed against a competitor like China that’s all in on this competition … we’re going to have to grasp the inevitability of AI,” Work said Wednesday at an AFCEA event.

Ellen Lord: DoD to Begin 5G Experiments in 2019

Ellen Lord, undersecretary of defense for acquisition and sustainment and 2019 Wash100 Award winner, told attendees at a recent Atlantic Council event that the Department of Defense will conduct a series of experiments on 5G communications technology, Defense One reported Monday. The DoD’s research and engineering arm will oversee the experiments scheduled for later this year.

James Mattis Named Davies Family Distinguished Fellow at Stanford’s Hoover Institution

James Mattis, former secretary of the Department of Defense and two-time Wash100 Award recipient, has been named Davies Family Distinguished Fellow at the Hoover Institution at Stanford University, effective May 1. Mattis plans to focus his research on domestic and international security policy and participate in military and national security-related programs and events at Hoover sites in California and Washington, D.C., the institution said Tuesday.

FBI Director Christopher Wray: Industry Partnerships Necessary to Protect US

FBI Director Christopher Wray wants to increase the agency’s partnerships with the private sector to improve security and deter threats by foreign adversaries such as China, Fifth Domain reported Tuesday. Wray said any operation to defend the U.S. now requires partnerships between law enforcement and industry, particularly in protecting critical infrastructures, 90 percent of which is privately owned.

OMB’s Russ Vought: Trump Plans to Designate Additional Defense Spending as OCO in FY 2020 Budget

Russ Vought, acting director of the White House Office of Management and Budget, said President Trump plans to propose a fiscal 2020 budget to fund defense and national security priorities without raising the spending caps. Vought wrote in a commentary posted Monday for RealClearPolitics that the proposed budget will designate additional defense resources as overseas contingency operations funds, which are not subject to the budget caps.

President Trump signed a new directive to establish the new U.S. Space Force as the sixth military branch within the Department of the Air Force. The fourth space policy directive published Tuesday says the secretary of the Department of Defense should submit to the Office of Management and Budget a legislative proposal creating the Space Force.

Sen. Warner Reintroduces Bill to Boost National Security

Sen. Mark Warner, D-Va., re-introduced a bill aiming to improve U.S. national security through a modernized security clearance system and a new workforce to handle national security and public safety missions. The Modernizing the Trusted Workforce for the 21st Century Act would also help the government reduce its background investigation backlog, Warner said in a statement released Friday. The bill was introduced to the Senate in 2018.
