Sandia Nat’l Labs Developing AI Capabilities for Hypersonic Vehicles

The Department of Energy's Sandia National Labs is working to integrate automated technology into hypersonic vehicles to support flight and mission planning and improve aircraft survivability, National Defense reported Thursday. Alex Roesler, deputy director of Sandia's integrated military systems center, said that automating mission and flight planning for hypersonic aircraft would accelerate testing operations that normally require extensive expert input and take weeks to plan during the U.S. Army’s Mad Scientist event in Texas.

NIST Unveils Maryland Solar Panel Array

The National Institute of Standards and Technology inaugurated a large solar energy array during the agency's celebration of Earth Day. The array consists of 15,000 panels and is built to provide over 8 million killowatt-hours of energy in the agency's facility in Gaithersburg, Md., NIST said Monday. The agency noted that the array will mitigate the release of approximately 6,200 metric tons of annual carbon emissions based from a formula created by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. In addition, the array will potentially help NIST save $3.5 million in expenses for the next two decades.

DOE Announces $95M Funding for SBIR, STTR Phase II

The Department of Energy intends to award $95 million in 86 grants across 74 firms under the Small Business Innovation Research and Small Business Technology Transfer programs. The grants cover phase II of the programs and would finance projects that passed technical feasibility qualifications during the first phase, DOE said Monday. Each awardee would receive a grant valued around $1 million covering a two-year research and development period for prototyping.
