Reformed Defense Security Service to Reduce Small Business Programs; Elizabeth Mudd Quoted

The Defense Counterintelligence and Security Agency, formerly known as the Defense Security Service, plans to reduce small business engagement after merging with the National Background Investigations Bureau, FCW reported Wednesday. DCSA's small businesses goal would drop from 65 percent to below 10 percent as NBIB transfers to the Department of Defense, Elizabeth Mudd, DCSA's small business program manager, said at an Armed Forces Communications and Electronics Association event.

Mark Nehmer: AI Can Resolve Background Investigation Issues

Mark Nehmer, technical director for the Defense Security Service’s National Background Investigative Services, said that artificial intelligence can significantly help government officials in conducting background investigations, the Department of Defense said Monday. Nehmer told attendees at a Nextgov event held on March 29 in Arlington Va., that AI can quicken the pace of investigations, resolve understaffing issues, decrease case backlog and mitigate a “Snowden-like event” or instances of government leaks.

Defense Security Service to Oversee DISA’s National Background Investigation Service

A Pentagon memorandum directs the director of the Defense Security Service to assume responsibility for the Defense Information Systems Agency’s National Background Investigation Service to build up the Department of Defense’s personnel vetting process. DISA said on Thursday that 2019 Wash100 Award winner David Norquist, who serves as deputy secretary at DoD, issued the Jan. 28 memo on the realignment with the provisions of the fiscal 2018 National Defense Authorization Act.

Report: White House Eyes DoD to Handle Governmentwide Security Clearance Process

President Donald Trump plans to authorize the Defense Department to oversee the governmentwide program for security clearances through an executive order, Federal News Network reported Tuesday. Sources said the Pentagon plans to combine the National Background Investigations Bureau with the Defense Security Service and other DoD components to establish the Defense Counterintelligence and Security Agency to oversee the security clearance process.
