The Federal Emergency Management Agency held a national trial to test the Emergency Alert System, a service designed to notify U.S. citizens on national emergencies, Techcrunch reported Wednesday. The system reached radios and televisions across the country with the message “This is a test of the National Emergency Alert System.”

DHS S&T, USFA, FEMA to Close Wildfire Gaps Under Public Safety Partnership

The Department of Homeland Security's science and technology directorate, Federal Emergency Management Agency and the U.S. Fire Administration have teamed up with the international first responder community to address wildfire concerns in wildland-urban interface areas. FEMA will help optimize and address operational issues for public communications, intergovernmental coordination and wildland fire monitoring to augment building codes and infrastructure security, DHS said Tuesday.

DHS Works to Fix Cybersecurity Issues

The Department of Homeland Security made progress addressing the problems with its patch management and security efforts. The DHS inspector general issued its semi-annual report describing how the agency worked on its internal cybersecurity deficiencies. DHS closed one previous OIG recommendation and resolved two others to better secure information, according to the watchdog report submitted Wednesday to Congress.

DHS S&T to Participate in FEMA Earthquake Response Event

The Department of Homeland Security's science and technology directorate in a Federal Emergency Management Agency exercise intending to simulate earthquake response and recovery efforts in Memphis, Tenn, DHS said Wednesday. The agency will team up with local, state, federal and international organizations to assess approaches and technologies in urban search and rescue and information sharing functions as part of the three-day Shaken Fury 2019 event.

Former DISA Exec Lytwaive Hutchinson Named FEMA CIO

Lytwaive Hutchinson, former vice director of the Defense Information Systems Agency’s Joint Service Provider, has been appointed to serve as the Federal Emergency Management Agency's chief information officer, Fedscoop reported Tuesday. She succeeds Adrian Gardner who will go on to serve as executive director of recovery communications technology within FEMA's Caribbean Area Division.
