DHS S&T to Participate in FEMA Earthquake Response Event

The Department of Homeland Security's science and technology directorate in a Federal Emergency Management Agency exercise intending to simulate earthquake response and recovery efforts in Memphis, Tenn, DHS said Wednesday. The agency will team up with local, state, federal and international organizations to assess approaches and technologies in urban search and rescue and information sharing functions as part of the three-day Shaken Fury 2019 event.

Former DISA Exec Lytwaive Hutchinson Named FEMA CIO

Lytwaive Hutchinson, former vice director of the Defense Information Systems Agency’s Joint Service Provider, has been appointed to serve as the Federal Emergency Management Agency's chief information officer, Fedscoop reported Tuesday. She succeeds Adrian Gardner who will go on to serve as executive director of recovery communications technology within FEMA's Caribbean Area Division.

NASA, FEMA to Support International Asteroid Impact Simulation

NASA and the Federal Emergency Management Agency are planning to conduct an asteroid impact simulation with international partners. The two agencies will take part in a simulated tabletop exercise through which they will work to identify critical aspects and issues of disaster response for a possible asteroid impact, NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory said Wednesday.

Jeffrey Byard to be Nominated FEMA Administrator

President Trump intends to nominate Jeffrey Byard, associate administrator for response and recovery at the Federal Emergency Management Agency, as administrator of FEMA within the Department of Homeland Security. Previously, he worked as an executive operations officer and mitigation division planner at the Alabama Emergency Management Agency and led evacuation efforts for the state during Hurricane Gustav, the White House said Friday.

Roger Stone Appointed White House IT Director

Roger Stone, formerly deputy senior director of resilience policy of the National Security Council, has been named director of information technology at the White House, FedScoop reported Monday. He succeeds Chris Herndon, who served as head of IT for two years, and will serve as chief information officer of the executive offices of the president and vice president.
