DHS Requests Feedback on Vulnerability Assessment Process

The Department of Homeland Security's Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency seeks third party feedback on an effort to assess infrastructure security. CISA uses a system to gather critical infrastructure data from organizations, but the cost of assessments has risen from $1.8M to $1.9M, DHS said Thursday in a Federal Register notice.

Commerce Dept Seeking Public Comments on Draft Federal Data Strategy Action Plan

The Department of Commerce is set to publish in the Federal Register a request for public comments on the draft action plan for the Federal Data Strategy on Tuesday. The department said in the notice that the strategy seeks to help agencies leverage mission-support, statistical and program data as a strategic asset to promote transparency, facilitate oversight, build up the economy and increase the effectiveness of the federal government.

A subcommittee within the National Science and Technology Council urges agencies to help sustain the country's spot as the world's frontrunner in quantum information science. NSTC's Subcommittee on Quantum Information Science seeks agency input regarding eight different questions on the scientific area as the council works to develop a QIS strategic overview, the National Science Foundation said Thursday in a Federal Register notice.

NIST Expands Hiring Authority for IT Leads, Engineers, Scientists

The National Institute of Standards and Technology released new direct hiring authorities to allow federal hiring managers to skip some steps in the process to employ new information technology managers, general engineers and general physical scientists. “The expanded direct-hire authority will allow NIST to simplify and expedite hiring for managers in mission critical occupations,” according to a notice issued Thursday.

FCC Issues Final Rule on CIO’s IT Responsibilities

The Federal Communications Commission introduced a final rule to direct the agency’s chief information officer to play a “significant role” in developing FCC’s information technology capabilities. The FCC CIO will play a bigger role in IT oversight, management and governance; decision-making process for budgeting, multiyear and annual planning, programming and reports related to IT; and recruitment of IT personnel, according to the document.
