The House Science Committee has called on the Federal Communications Commission to delay an April 23 vote on its updated space debris regulations, SpaceNews reported Friday. The FCC on April 2 issued its draft “Mitigating Orbital Debris in the New Space Age” regulations, which would allow the commission to deny licenses to companies operating satellite networks with a collective collision risk of more than 1 in 1,000.

Rep. Frank Lucas Introduces ARPA-E Reform Bill

Rep. Frank Lucas, R-Okla., has presented a bill that aims to reform, reauthorize the Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy with boosted budget. The ARPA-E Reauthorization and Reform Act of 2019 would authorize ARPA-E for five more years and increase the agency's annual funds by $27M, the House Science, Space and Technology Committee said Wednesday.

US Representatives Launch Academic Research Security Bill; Jim Langevin Quoted

Representatives Jim Langevin, Frank Lucas, Anthony Gonzalez, Elise Stefanik and Mikie Sherrill unveiled a bipartisan legislation that seeks to protect academic research from foreign espionage. The Securing American Science and Technology Act of 2019 will require the director of the Office of Science and Technology and Policy to create an interagency committee to assess security functions for funded research efforts and build a protocol to respond to security concerns, the office of Jim Langevin said Thursday.
