The Department of Defense (DoD) is asking Congress to cancel the statutory requirement to develop an unclassified version of the Future Years Defense Program, the Federation of American Scientists reported Monday. DoD offers its defense spending estimates for the next five years through FYDP and the Pentagon said it might inadvertently disclose sensitive data through the publication of unclassified FYDP.

Michael Griffin: DoD Research & Engineering Office Makes 5G a Top Priority

Michael Griffin, undersecretary of defense for research and engineering and 2019 Wash100 Award recipient, said that 5G deployment is one of the technology programs being prioritized by his office, C4ISRNET reported Monday. “What we’re trying to do in the department with 5G is to make available our, broadly speaking, requirement set, whether it be depots or ports or airfields or autonomous vehicles or so on,” he told reporters at the Space and Missile Defense Symposium in Huntsville, Ala.

CBO Estimates DoD Spending to Reach $776B by 2034

The Congressional Budget Office released a report stating that the Department of Defense’s projected $718B spending from 2020 to 2024 would increase to $776B or 13 percent by 2034. CBO assessed DoD’s Future Years Defense Program which includes the department’s projected costs for programs within a five-year period.

Trump May Opt for Emergency Declaration to Fund Border Wall

President Donald Trump has said he may pursue a national emergency to fund the construction of a wall along the U.S.-Mexico border should negotiations over spending fail, Federal Times reported Wednesday. “I think we might work a deal and if we don’t, I may go that route. I have the absolute right to do national emergency if I want,” he told reporters Wednesday at the White House.

Army Secretary Mark Esper has said the service has evaluated every activity and program within the “equipping peg” and identified $25B in funds that could be shifted toward its top six priorities for modernization, Defense News reported Monday. The service’s modernization priorities are the next-generation combat vehicle; long-range precision fires; network; soldier lethality; future vertical lift; and air and missile defense.
