Air Force Taps Academia to Expand Hypersonic Testing Facilities

The U.S. Air Force is partnering with Purdue University and the University of Notre Dame in Indiana to expand its testing facilities for future hypersonic technologies, Military.com reported Tuesday. Air Force spokesperson Ann Stefanek said the universities will build “quiet wind tunnels” to reduce free stream disturbances and for more accurate aerothermodynamics predictions.

Defense to Name Assistant Director of Artificial Intelligence

The Department of Defense will appoint an assistant director to facilitate the application of artificial intelligence capabilities to directed energy systems, C4ISRNET reported Wednesday. Michael Griffin, the department undersecretary of research and engineering, created the assistant director for AI in 2017 along with other positions that are focused on specific technology areas including hypersonics and directed energy.

Patrick Shanahan: DoD’s FY 2020 Spending Plan a ‘Requirement-Informed Budget’

Acting Defense Secretary Patrick Shanahan said the Pentagon’s $718 billion funding request for fiscal 2020 is a “requirement-informed budget” supporting the National Defense Strategy and addressing threats posed by Russia and China, the Department of Defense website reported Thursday. Shanahan, a 2019 Wash100 winner, testified on Thursday before the Senate Armed Services Committee to provide an overview of DoD's FY 2020 budget request and how its provisions intend to respond to those specific threats.

Report: Jim Faist, Milan Nikolich Named Directors at DoD’s Research & Engineering Org

The Defense Department has appointed government industry veterans Jim Faist and Milan "Mitch" Nikolich as directors within the newly created research and engineering division, Inside Defense reported Thursday. Faist will oversee hypersonics, autonomy, space and networked command, control and communications areas as director of defense research and engineering for capabilities, a DoD spokeswoman told the publication.
