Reps. Khanna, Lawrence Sponsor Resolution for AI Ethics

Two members of Congress, Reps. Ro Khanna, D-Calif., and Brenda Lawrence, D-Mich., introduced a resolution calling for ethical standards to guide the field of artificial intelligence. H.RES. 153 supports cooperation among industry, government, academia and civil institutions in the field, promoting transparency of AI systems and processes, protecting private and personal information, boosting career opportunities in the sector and maintaining the safety of its platforms, Khanna said Thursday.

IBM Strikes $34B Deal for Red Hat; Ginni Rometty, Jim Whitehurst Quoted

IBM has agreed to acquire Red Hat for approximately $34B in a move both companies expect to create a global hybrid cloud provider. IBM said Sunday it will pay $190M in cash for each share of Red Hat under the deal that is expected to conclude in the latter half of next year, subject to approvals by Red Hat shareholders and regulators.

Researcher Calls for Appointment of Chief Data Officers at Federal Agencies

Jane Wiseman, a Senior Fellow at the Harvard Kennedy School’s Ash Center for Democratic Governance and Innovation, has called on the heads of federal agencies to appoint a chief data officer or establish a data management position at their respective departments. Wiseman made the recommendation in a recently released report, noting the inability of government agencies to leverage data in decision-making due to sheer volume.
