ODNI Creates Tech Innovation Unit

The Office of the Director of National Intelligence has created a new unit focused on the deployment of innovative technologies to the 17 intelligence community agencies as well as government entities. ODNI said on Wednesday that the Lateral Innovation division operates under the Transformation and Innovation Office within the agency’s Strategy and Engagement Component.

Sue Gordon, principal deputy director of national intelligence, said the intelligence community is expanding its use of artificial intelligence to accelerate data analysis, facilitate the decision-making process and keep ahead of adversaries, Nextgov reported Thursday. “We are going to have to make machines integrated into all our processes,” she said Thursday at the Defense One Tech Summit.

Trump Directs Intell Community Cooperation on 2016 Election Investigation

President Trump is calling on the intelligence community to “quickly and fully cooperate” with investigations on alleged surveillance operations during the 2016 presidential elections, the White House said Thursday. Trump is directing the community to comply with the attorney general, who is tasked with examining potential cases of election-related interference and will have full and complete authority to declassify information relevant to the investigation.

John Edwards, chief information officer at the CIA, has said the agency should update its technology platforms and optimize its workforce to accelerate data collection and generate insights from gathered information, FedTech Magazine published Tuesday. “Increasing the edge over our adversaries, our operational advantage will be determined by the speed at which we sense, collect, ingest, condition, analyze and characterize data of the representative threat,” he said in his speech at the FedScoop Public Sector Innovation Summit held Dec. 4 in Washington, D.C.
