White House OSTP Asks Public for Input on Biometrics Use Cases, Policies


The White House's Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP) seeks feedback on how biometric technologies have performed in organizations and how they affect individuals emotionally and mentally. OSTP wants to understand how both public and private sector organizations have used and regulated biometric technologies, such as facial recognition, in the past and present, the office said Oct. 4th in a Federal Register notice.

TransUnion Study Shows Prevalence of Account Takeover Fraud in Public Sector; Jonathan McDonald Quoted

A study conducted by TransUnion and the Ponemon Institute has found that 53 percent of federal, state and local government agency leaders said they have seen an increase in threats related to account takeover fraud in the past two years. “Combatting fraud in each vector, from mobile to online portals, is an imperative and essential task that government agencies must address in 2021,” said Jonathan McDonald, executive vice president and head of TransUnion’s public sector business.

CBP to Expand Use of Facial Recognition Tech in Entry-Exit Process

The Customs and Border Protection (CBP) has proposed to amend rules to expand the use of facial recognition systems to improve the process of verifying the identity of foreign visitors arriving and departing from airports, sea ports and land ports. “Full implementation at for land and sea ports of entry will follow after CBP has tested and refined its biometric exit strategies in those environments,” the notice reads.

TSA to Test Automated Biometrics Tech at McCarran Airport

The Transportation Security Administration will test a new identity verification process based on automated biometrics technology at the McCarran International Airport in Las Vegas. According to a Department of Homeland Security publication released Friday, TSA will conduct a short-term proof of concept to evaluate the use of Credential Authentication Technology with Camera to verify passengers going through the Travel Document Checker process.
