USAF Brig. Gen. Wayne Monteith Named FAA Associate Administrator for Commercial Space Transportation

Brig. Gen. Wayne Monteith, a retiring U.S. Air Force commander, has been named the Federal Aviation Administration's associate administrator for commercial space transportation, effective Jan. 20, 2019. He will oversee the Office of Commercial Space Transportation that is charged with protecting national security and foreign policy interests, as well as the public, with regard to commercial launch, the FAA said Thursday.

Report: Defense Intelligence Agency Needs to Develop FOIA Backlog Reduction Plan

The intelligence community's inspector general has called on the Defense Intelligence Agency's leadership to formulate a plan to reduce its backlog of Freedom of Information Act requests. In September, the ICIG explained in a report that a FOIA request is considered part of an agency’s backlog when it remains unprocessed after 20 working days, or 30 days in special circumstances.

John Sherman: Five Eyes CIO Meeting Aims to Advance Intelligence Collaboration, Data Sharing

John Sherman, chief information officer of the Intelligence Community, has said he plans to hold in two weeks a meeting of CIOs from Canada, Australia, New Zealand and the U.K. to address issues with regard to intelligence data sharing and collaboration, FedScoop reported Wednesday. “We’ve been able at some level to collaborate with our Five Eyes allied partners for a number of years, and there’s been some notable strides in terms of more seamless email, connectivity, video teleconferencing, phone,” he said at an event hosted by George Washington University and Fed Insider.

House Lawmakers Urge Intelligence Community to Look Into ‘Deep Fake’ Tech

Carlos Curbelo, R-Fla., Stephanie Murphy, D-Fla., and Adam Schiff, D-Calif., sent a letter to National Intelligence Director Daniel Coats on Sept. 13 expressing concern over the possibility that “malicious foreign actors” could use advanced technology to produce “deep fakes”—fraudulent audio recordings, images or videos that are virtually indistinguishable from authentic ones—to blackmail individuals, sow disinformation and potentially threaten public discourse and national security.

U.S. intelligence community leaders have said they believe artificial intelligence and automation could help intelligence analysts process a larger pool of data to explore a scenario and address a problem, Federal News Radio reported Thursday. Neil Wiley, director for analysis at the Defense Intelligence Agency, said he believes having access to large volumes of data through automation would lead to new possibilities from an ethical and analytical perspective.
