OSTP, GSA Issue Report on Agencies’ Use of Prize Competitions; Kelvin Droegemeier Quoted

A joint report by the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy and the General Services Administration shows that the number of federal agency-backed prize competitions listed on Challenge.gov has increased from 744 to 875 since the 2016 study, FCW reported Friday. The challenges authorized under the America COMPETES Reauthorization Act of 2010 have led to the emergence of startups and offered agencies a mass of examples to launch their own initiatives, according to the report.

The White House formed a new joint committee to lead the federal government’s efforts to address the challenges facing the U.S. research community and accelerate innovation, Nextgov reported Tuesday. The Office of Science and Technology Policy said that the committee will coordinate government agencies, academia and the private sector to improve the “safety, integrity and productivity” of research projects.

Kelvin Droegemeier: Research Initiatives Needed to Drive Progress in AI

Kelvin Droegemeier, the Trump administration’s new science adviser, said during the annual American Association for the Advancement of Science meeting that fostering artificial intelligence research will drive progress in the field, Geek Wire reported Friday. Droegemeier, newly appointed director of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, added that AI research must assess future demands and capabilities that can “supercharge progress” in the field.

Kelvin Droegemeier Confirmed as Office of Science & Technology Policy Director

The Senate on Tuesday confirmed Kelvin Droegemeier, a former member of the National Science Board, as director of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, Federal Times reported Thursday. President Donald Trump announced in late July his intent to nominate Droegemeier for the lead role at OSTP.
