Kenneth Cuccinelli Appointed Acting Citizenship & Immigration Services Director

Kenneth Cuccinelli, former attorney general of Virginia, has been named acting director of the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services within the Department of Homeland Security. “I look forward to working with the men and women of USCIS to ensure our legal immigration system operates effectively and efficiently while deterring fraud and protecting the American people,” Cuccinelli said in a statement published Monday.

Robert Bonner, Leon Fresco Inducted to Homeland Security Advisory Council

Kevin McAleenan, acting secretary of homeland security and 2019 Wash100 Award winner, swore in former judge Robert Bonner and lawyer Leon Fresco as new members of the Homeland Security Advisory Council at a recent meeting. McAleenan also discussed a set of homeland security matters with the council during the public session, DHS said Tuesday. The acting secretary also unveiled a new HSAC mission to protect religious organizations in the U.S.

Secret Service Lead Randolph Alles Joins DHS as Head of Management

Randolph Alles, former director of the U.S. Secret Service, has been appointed acting deputy under secretary for management at the Department of Homeland Security, replacing former Deputy Under Secretary Chip Fulghum. He will oversee management programs, including financial, human capital, information technology, procurement, security and asset management, Kevin McAleenan, acting homeland security secretary and 2019 Wash100 Award winner, said in a statement posted Friday. Alles left his role with the Secret Service last week after two years.

Executive Order Directs DHS, Other Agencies to Strengthen Cyber Workforce; Kevin McAleenan Quoted

President Trump signed an executive order Thursday requiring the federal government to implement measures to build up the country’s cybersecurity workforce. The EO directs the Department of Homeland Security to establish the Federal Cybersecurity Rotational Program that would allow government cyber and information technology professionals to work at DHS through temporary assignments to facilitate knowledge sharing, DHS said Thursday.

John Roth, former inspector general at the Department of Homeland Security, said current vacancies in the upper echelon of DHS affect the department’s ability to move forward, CNN reported Wednesday. "This lack of settled leadership contributes to the significant morale problems that are endemic to DHS components," Roth said Wednesday in his written testimony before the House Homeland Security Committee.

Kevin McAleenan: DHS Merging All Immigrant Processing IT Systems

Kevin McAleenan, acting secretary of the Department of Homeland Security and 2018 Wash100 Award winner, said DHS will request more funds through a fiscal year 2019 supplemental request and FY 2020 budget request to better implement its immigration policies and perform upgrades to its information technology systems, FCW reported Tuesday. He told a House Appropriations subcommittee the department intends to combine all immigrant processing IT systems used by the Customs and Border Protection and other agencies within DHS through an “immigration portal.”

The Department of Homeland Security created a committee to help respond to all forms of violence. The Office for Targeted Violence and Terrorism Prevention will coordinate, follow through and use the agency's prevention activities including information sharing and law enforcement briefings to protect communities from potential threats, DHS said Friday.
