Courtney Winship: USCIS Initiates Measures to Implement Digital Government Law

Courtney Winship, head of digital services division at the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, mentioned during a GovLoop webinar that the USCIS is taking measures to implement a new law to improve the accessibility and security of government websites, Federal News Network reported Thursday. Winship said USCIS plans to adopt a mobile-first approach to comply with the 21st-Century Integrated Digital Experience Act and has merged some of the departments that deal with public-facing digital platforms in the past six to eight months.

The U.S. Air Force Research Laboratory and the U.K.'s Defense Science and Technology Laboratory is hosting a competition to identify new planning approaches for search and rescue missions with unmanned aircraft systems. Swarm and Search AI Challenge: 2019 Fire Hack will task participants to develop artificial intelligence applications to map wildfires, support mission planning and respond to dynamic changes, Wright-Patterson Air Force Base said Tuesday.

NGA Eyes Artificial Intelligence to Help Analysts Explore the ‘Unknown’

The head of analysis at the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency wants to utilize artificial intelligence to help analysts review satellite imagery and observe unknown locations and activities. Susan Kalweit, director of analysis at NGA, said AI could take over tasks to analyze images of places human analysts are familiar with, which would then allow them to focus on “unknown” areas, according to a statement DoD said Friday.

Eric Schmidt, Eric Horvitz Named to Artificial Intelligence Commission

The House Armed Services Committee has named Eric Schmidt, technical adviser to Alphabet’s board; and Eric Horvitz, director of Microsoft Labs; to the National Security Commission on Artificial Intelligence. The commission was formed through the fiscal 2019 National Defense Authorization Act to assess developments in AI, machine learning and related technologies as well as their implications for national security, the committee said Wednesday.

Report: Jim Faist, Milan Nikolich Named Directors at DoD’s Research & Engineering Org

The Defense Department has appointed government industry veterans Jim Faist and Milan "Mitch" Nikolich as directors within the newly created research and engineering division, Inside Defense reported Thursday. Faist will oversee hypersonics, autonomy, space and networked command, control and communications areas as director of defense research and engineering for capabilities, a DoD spokeswoman told the publication.
