The Bureau of Cyberspace Security and Emerging Technologies will spearhead U.S. efforts to foster international partnerships and drive the discussion on technology and cyber policy issues.

Mike Pompeo: Investment Ban to Cover ETFs, Index Funds, Subsidiaries of Firms Linked to Chinese Military

State Secretary Mike Pompeo has announced that the Department of the Treasury (DoT) will prohibit U.S. companies and individuals from investing in index funds, exchange traded funds and subsidiaries of Chinese companies with ties to the Chinese military. Pompeo said in a statement published Monday the move is in compliance with an executive order signed in November 2020.

Sen. Mark Warner Writes to Mike Pompeo on State Dept. Cybersecurity

Sen. Mark Warner, D-Va., wrote a letter to Secretary of State Mike Pompeo regarding the ability of the latter's department to protect information systems amid the conflict with Iran. Warner, also a 2019 Wash100 recipient, listed five questions addressed to Pompeo, and referenced the state department's cybersecurity weaknesses found in inspector general reports, as seen in the letter issued Tuesday.

Stuart McGuigan Named Permanent State Department CIO

Stuart McGuigan, former chief information officer of Johnson & Johnson, has been appointed as CIO of the State Department and head of the Bureau of Information Resource Management, Federal News Network reported Tuesday. McGuigan will replace acting CIO Karen Mummaw, who will retire in April after 31 years of service at State.

FBI Director Christopher Wray has said a group of Chinese state-sponsored threat actors compromised the computers of U.S. government agencies, firms and other organizations worldwide to steal large volumes of confidential business data and intellectual property. Wray made the remarks during a recent press conference announcing the indictment of two members of the APT 10 cyber hacking group - Zhu Hua and Zhang Shilong - linked to the Chinese state security ministry.
