White House Issues Update to 2016 National Artificial Intelligence R&D Strategic Plan

The White House’s National Science and Technology Council released an update to the 2016 strategic plan for artificial intelligence research and development in support of the American AI Initiative that was launched through an executive order in February. The National AI R&D Strategic Plan: 2019 Update retains the first seven priorities in the 2016 plan and adds a new strategy to expand public-private partnerships to accelerate advances in AI.

NSF’s S&T Council Seeks Info for Quantum Information Science Policy, Strategy

A subcommittee within the National Science and Technology Council urges agencies to help sustain the country's spot as the world's frontrunner in quantum information science. NSTC's Subcommittee on Quantum Information Science seeks agency input regarding eight different questions on the scientific area as the council works to develop a QIS strategic overview, the National Science Foundation said Thursday in a Federal Register notice.

White House Stands New Committee to Coordinate US Research Community

The White House formed a new joint committee to lead the federal government’s efforts to address the challenges facing the U.S. research community and accelerate innovation, Nextgov reported Tuesday. The Office of Science and Technology Policy said that the committee will coordinate government agencies, academia and the private sector to improve the “safety, integrity and productivity” of research projects.

NITRD Seeks Public Feedback on AI R&D Strategic Plan Revision

The Networking and Information Technology Research and Development National Coordination Office has issued a request for information on a plan to revise a strategy that aims to influence government research efforts in artificial intelligence. The RFI comes as the NITRD NCO and the National Science and Technology Council’s Select Committee on AI intend to update the 2016 National Artificial Intelligence Research and Development Strategic Plan to align with current priorities, NSF said in a Federal Register notice posted Wednesday.

NSTC Releases Document on National Quantum Information Science Strategy

The National Science and Technology Council recently released a document describing the government’s strategy to maintain and expand U.S. leadership in quantum information science. The document, entitled “National Strategic Overview for Quantum Information Science,” identifies QIS as the field in which the next technological revolution will take place, and through which the U.S. “can improve its industrial base, create jobs, and provide economic and national security benefits.”
