DOE Issues Restrictions on Sharing Civilian Nuclear Tech With China

The Energy Department has issued a new policy framework regulating cooperation between the U.S. and China concerning the sharing of civilian nuclear technology. The DoE said on Thursday that the new framework was developed due to concerns that China may be attempting to acquire nuclear technology from U.S. companies in such a manner that is, in the words of Energy Secretary Rick Perry, “outside of established processes of U.S.-China civil nuclear cooperation.”

Physicist Charles Verdon Appointed Deputy Administrator for DOE NNSA Office of Defense Programs

Charles Verdon, former principal associate director at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, has been sworn in as deputy administrator for defense programs at the Department of Energy‘s National Nuclear Security Administration. In his new role, he will lead the security agency's efforts to deter modern nuclear threats facing the country and manage nuclear stockpiles in collaboration with the Defense Department, the DOE said Tuesday.

NNSA Completes Final Design Review of B61-12 Bombs, Proceeds to Production Qualification Activities

The Energy Department’s National Nuclear Security Administration will proceed with the final production qualification activities of the B61-12 Life Extension Program after completing a final design review of a new B61 variant.

The department said Friday NNSA will initiate production qualification operations at its Pantex Plant within the month, then conduct phase 6.5 first production authorization in September 2019.
