Lorin Selby: Navy’s Predictive Maintenance Systems Must Enable Rapid Decision-Making

Rear Adm. Lorin Selby, chief engineer at the Naval Sea Systems Command, said at an American Society of Naval Engineers symposium that the Navy wants to deploy a sensor-based maintenance system, USNI News reported Monday. Selby told attendees that he wants to implement a way of generating software code to accelerate the decision-making process based on the Enterprise Remote Monitoring system’s predictive maintenance alerts for components such as engines, turbines and various hull, mechanical and electrical systems.

Air Force Implementing Predictive Analytics to Cut Aircraft Maintenance Costs

The U.S. Air Force is rolling out a predictive maintenance capability that deploys data analytics to identify aircraft components that need repairs before a system failure occurs, Air Force Times reported Sunday. The service has already tested the CBM+ predictive analytics technique on its B-1B Lancer, KC-135R tanker and C-5M aircraft at 10 Air Force bases worldwide.

Army Eyes New Techs to Modernize Base Ops, Maintenance

The U.S. Army issued a solicitation of industry feedback on the service’s plan to apply emerging technologies to modernize military bases, Federal News Network reported Friday. The service held an industry day to discuss the “installations of the future” concept, which aims to improve operations, maintenance and resilience of bases amid the growing threats of natural disasters, cyber attacks and other risks.

Coast Guard Partners With JAIC for AI, Predictive Maintenance Efforts

Capt. Michael Dickey, the U.S. Coast Guard’s C4IT Service Center commander, said the service branch is working with the Department of Defense’s Joint Artificial Intelligence Center on capabilities like predictive maintenance, FCW reported Tuesday. Dickey told attendees at an AFCEA event that the Coast Guard has deployed one of its personnel to JAIC and is seeking to implement AI for aircraft maintenance and data analysis.

Will Roper: Air Force Accelerating Contracting Process for Startups via Credit Card

Will Roper, assistant secretary of the U.S. Air Force for acquisition, technology and logistics, told Wired in an interview published on Sunday about the service’s upcoming pitch day in New York and how it plans to set up contracts for startups within a day through credit card-based awards. “We’re going to start doing awards at $158,000 per transaction,” said Roper, a 2019 Wash100 winner.
