Stacie Pettyjohn, formerly a political scientist at nonprofit public policy think tank Rand Corp., has joined the Center for a New American Security (CNAS) as a senior fellow and director of CNAS' defense program. “With Stacie at the helm, the team is poised to tackle the most critical, complicated, and controversial issues facing the Department of Defense while continuing its record of significant policy impact," said CNAS CEO Richard Fontaine.

Study Shows Air Force Capacity Limitations in Responding to Potential Future Challenges

The Rand Corporation said in a recent report entitled "Is the USAF Flying Force Large Enough?" that the U.S. Air Force faces capacity limitations in responding to the potential demands and challenges posed by different future security scenarios. The researchers noted that protracted military operations is a driver for this shortfall and proposed that military and political leadership explore “more force structure, develop alternative force presentation models that may more efficiently use existing forces” and become “more aware of the risks and costs of prolonged operations.”
