GAO: FY 2015-2018 Awards to Small Businesses Majority-Owned by Investment Firms, Funds Totaled $43.6M

The Government Accountability Office has found that only three out of 11 federal agencies that take part in the Small Business Innovation Research program awarded grants and contracts to small firms owned by venture capital companies, hedge funds and private equity firms in the past four fiscal years. Those three agencies are the Department of Education's Institute for Education Sciences, Department of Energy's Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy and the Department of Health and Human Services' National Institutes of Health, GAO said Friday.

Gen. Stephen Wilson: Air Force Launches Efforts to Speed Up Procurement Process

Gen. Stephen ‘Seve’ Wilson, Air Force vice chief of staff, told National Defense in an interview published Monday that the service has initiated efforts to accelerate the acquisition process in order to expedite the delivery of capabilities to warfighters. He noted that Will Roper, assistant secretary of the Air Force for acquisition, technology and logistics, came up with an idea to have the service sign 50 contracts in 50 hours in a move to speed up the procurement process.

The U.S. Air Force plans to test in October a new process that aims to speed up contract awards to startups and small businesses within days, FlightGlobal reported Friday. Will Roper, assistant secretary for the service's acquisition, technology and logistics, said the process would involve a call for startups to present their ideas in one or two pages and pitch their concepts through a “90-second video like Kickstarter.”
