Patrick Shanahan Hints at Possible NRO Integration Into Space Force

Acting Defense Secretary and 2019 Wash100 Award winner Patrick Shanahan told the Senate Armed Services Committee that the Pentagon could integrate the National Reconnaissance Office into the Space Force into the future, Defense News reported Thursday. Sen. Jack Reed (D-R.I.), SASC ranking member, asked about the Department of Defense’s reason for not putting NRO under the new service branch and Shanahan said DoD didn’t want to delay the formation of the new force.

Heather Wilson on Air Force’s Efforts to Maintain US Dominance in Space

Air Force Secretary and 2019 Wash100 Award winner Heather Wilson said the service adopts a comprehensive approach based on “a clear-eyed assessment of the world as it is” to maintain the country’s superiority in space, the Air Force reported Tuesday. Wilson the assessment extends to discussions over the establishment of space force as the sixth military branch during the 35th Space Symposium in Colorado Springs, Colo on Tuesday.

Patrick Shanahan: DoD Seeks to Grow ‘Margin of Dominance’ in Space

Acting Defense Secretary and 2019 Wash100 Award recipient Patrick Shanahan said the Department of Defense’s objective is to accelerate the “margin of dominance” in space to protect the country’s $19 trillion economy and military systems, the DoD website reported Wednesday. Shanahan said Wednesday at the Center for Strategic and International Studies that DoD’s reorganization efforts to recognize space as a warfighting domain supports the goal and involves the creation of a new Space Force within the Department of the Air Force, development of a new Space Command and formation of a new Space Development Agency.

Report: DoD Launches Space Development Agency

Acting Defense Secretary and 2019 Wash100 Award winner Patrick Shanahan officially unveiled the new space development agency, CNN reported Wednesday. Fred Kennedy, director of the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency’s tactical technology office, will lead the agency as part of the proposed space force, according to a copy of Shanahan’s memo obtained by the publication.

Will Roper: Air Force Accelerating Contracting Process for Startups via Credit Card

Will Roper, assistant secretary of the U.S. Air Force for acquisition, technology and logistics, told Wired in an interview published on Sunday about the service’s upcoming pitch day in New York and how it plans to set up contracts for startups within a day through credit card-based awards. “We’re going to start doing awards at $158,000 per transaction,” said Roper, a 2019 Wash100 winner.

The Pentagon wants to transfer personnel, programs and other resources from the armed forces to the proposed Space Force once it's created under the Department of the Air Force, SpaceNews reported Thursday. The Department of Defense plans to request for Congress to grant the secretary of defense “special temporary authorities” to supply the new service the resources and workforce it would need to begin initial operations.

New White House Directive Calling for DoD to Form Space Force

President Trump signed a new directive to establish the new U.S. Space Force as the sixth military branch within the Department of the Air Force. The fourth space policy directive published Tuesday says the secretary of the Department of Defense should submit to the Office of Management and Budget a legislative proposal creating the Space Force.
