Coast Guard Working on Rebuilding Hurricane-Damaged Facilities

Vice Adm. Scott Buschman, commander of the U.S. Coast Guard’s Atlantic area, has said the service is still looking to repair its facilities damaged by three hurricanes two years ago, Federal News Network reported Wednesday. Buschman noted that Coast Guard facilities in the Virgin Islands, South and North Carolina, Puerto Rico, Florida and Texas are yet to fully recover from the impact of hurricanes Harvey, Irma and Maria.

Coast Guard Seeking Funds for Modernized Patrol Cutters, Aircraft

Adm. Daniel Abel, the U.S. Coast Guard’s deputy commandant for operations, said during a House hearing that he aims to address USCG’s efforts to modernize its legacy assets, Federal News Network reported Wednesday. “As a branch of the armed forces, we have not benefited from some of the rises in operating budget that we would hope,” he said.

Coast Guard Partners With JAIC for AI, Predictive Maintenance Efforts

Capt. Michael Dickey, the U.S. Coast Guard’s C4IT Service Center commander, said the service branch is working with the Department of Defense’s Joint Artificial Intelligence Center on capabilities like predictive maintenance, FCW reported Tuesday. Dickey told attendees at an AFCEA event that the Coast Guard has deployed one of its personnel to JAIC and is seeking to implement AI for aircraft maintenance and data analysis.

Coast Guard to Field Insitu UAVs Aboard Nat’l Security Cutters

The U.S. Coast Guard plans to deploy small drones developed by Boeing's Insitu subsidiary onto four more National Security Cutters by the end of 2019, Flight Global reported Wednesday. The Scan Eagle unmanned aerial vehicles will contain payloads including sensor systems, communications relay platforms and a laser pointer to support various USCG missions including search-and-rescue, ice-breaking and anti-drug trafficking.
