Applications for USDA Rural Internet Pilot Program Now Open

The U.S. Department of Agriculture has opened applications for a pilot program aimed at establishing modern broadband infrastructure for rural communities. USDA said Tuesday it will allot a minimum of $600M for the first round of the ReConnect Rural Broadband Pilot Program. A third of the initial funds will cover grants, while the remaining fraction will be equally split for loan-grant combinations and low-interest loans.

GSA Eyes Expansion of Centers of Excellence Program

The General Services Administration is looking to implement centers of excellence in three additional agencies this year to further support President Donald Trump's management agenda, Fedscoop reported Wednesday. Anil Cheriyan, who leads the agency's Technology Transformation Service, said that GSA is currently discussing on how to move forward with the CoE program and may announce the next participating agency next month.

Report: Federal Funding Lapse Impacts Staffing Levels at Some Agencies

A lapse in federal appropriations that started on Saturday due to a partial government shutdown has affected some federal agencies, Federal News Network reported Thursday. About 32K employees at the Department of Homeland Security have been precluded from going to work, including 1.5K personnel at DHS’ management directorate who have been put on emergency furlough.

USDA Recognizes National Labs for Bio-Based Product Efforts

The U.S. Department of Agriculture granted the Excellence in BioPreferred Procurement Awards to Los Alamos and Lawrence Livermore National Laboratories. The awards recognize the national laboratories' fiscal 2018 works on biobased products, USDA said Monday. LANL used biobased products as alternatives to traditional oil-based lubricants for metal-cutting machines, resulting in savings in oil and reduced cases of overspray. Meanwhile, LLNL recycled biobased materials to produce cutlery, cups, containers and other food service ware. The laboratory recycled 68 metric tons of compostable waste last year.

GSA, USDA, Labor Dept Awarded Second Round of Tech Modernization Funds

The Technology Modernization Board has awarded $23.5M in second round of funds to help three federal agencies upgrade their information technology infrastructure, Federal Times reported Monday. The General Services Administration and the departments of Agriculture and Labor were the award recipients under the Technology Modernization Fund’s round two.

Gary Washington: USDA to Implement Modern Platforms in Next 12 Months Under CoE Program

Gary Washington, chief information officer at the Agriculture Department, told Federal News Network in an interview posted Monday that USDA will begin implementing new technology platforms in the next 12 to 18 months as part of the Centers of Excellence program. Washington said USDA has already closed 21 of the 39 data centers slated for shutdown and will continue to introduce changes to Farmers.gov to improve the customer experience.
