Reps. Suzan DelBene, D-Wash., and Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y. have introduced a bill aiming to augment protection of U.S. consumer information.The Information Transparency and Personal Data Control Act would require companies to attain user consent before being able to use private information, DelBene’s office said Thursday.
The bill would also authorize the Federal Trade Commission to impose related regulations and receive required, third party-based privacy audits from firms.
“With Americans spending roughly 24 hours per week online, and a quarter of people saying they’re on the internet almost constantly, it’s our job to ensure consumers have a clear understanding of what happens to their data,” said DelBene, a former executive at Microsoft.
