NAVWAR Builds Naval 5G Implementation Team

Naval Information Warfare Systems Command has gathered individuals for a team to help the Department of the Navy implement 5G connectivity across operations, DVIDS Hub reported Monday.

NAVWAR formed the 5G integrated product team in late 2019 for DON’s support of a 5G initiative by the Department of Defense.

The 5G IPT will manage assets including 5G devices to better monitor supply chain-related activities.

“To ensure our warfighters have the upper hand in every conflict, we must work with our partners across industry to leverage new and existing technology, providing the warfighter with modernized, mobile and integrated capabilities like 5G,” said Pat Sullivan, executive director at NAVWAR.

Dan Green, who leads NAVWAR’s 5G IPT, said 5G technology could boost the speed, scalability and transparency of warehouse activities.

The command is now working to establish the processes, security policy and workforce needed for the 5G implementation.

The Department of Defense conducted a couple of small business online seminars this month amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

DoD said Monday its Office of Small Business Programs hosted defense webinars on COVID-19 relief efforts and the pandemic’s effects on industrial cybersecurity.

“This webinar series has been instrumental in helping identify COVID-19 impacts and solutions in the small business community, especially those in the defense industrial base,” said Amy Murray, OSBP director.

The series’ next webinar, scheduled for Wednesday, will tackle issues on foreign investments made by adversaries and ways to address adversarial capital.

DoD’s David Stapleton and Andrew Pahutski, who lead trusted capital and global markets and investments, respectively, will appear in the upcoming webinar.

DoD Eyes Nuclear Microreactors for Long-Term Humanitarian, Relief Missions

The Department of Defense has selected BWX Technologies, X-energy and Westinghouse Government Services to submit concepts for a mobile nuclear reactor as part of a prototyping program called “Project Pele”, National Defense Magazine reported Monday.

The DoD will downselect one of the firms to further develop and demonstrate a nuclear reactor concept following a two-year design and maturation phase as part of the Strategic Capabilities Office project.

In a prior press release, the department noted that a nuclear microreactor would allow units to generate clean power supply, provide long-term support to critical infrastructure and conduct extended operations such as humanitarian and emergency response missions around the world.

“If I can get a small nuclear reactor that’s safe in the size of a 40-foot container — which is what we’re looking at right now — and deliver it somewhere, it will fuel a city,” noted Maj. Gen. Sue Davidson, director for logistics, engineering and security cooperation at the U.S. Indo-Pacific Command, during a National Defense Industrial Association event in Honolulu.

The DoD uses over 30 terawatt-hours of power annually and 10 million gallons of fuel per day, according to National Defense’s report.

VA Connects Veterans to Health Care Data via Mobile Apps

The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) has been working with industry to help the country’s former servicemen access health care data. Veterans may use their iOS or Android mobile devices to access health records online through the iBlueButton and MyLinks apps, VA said Monday.

These apps allow veterans to open and manage health information remotely and securely. Users may also access the apps as web applications via browsers.

MyLinks features commands to access and share aggregated health records including those of family members, and iBlueButton connects with the department’s My HealtheVet that provides tools and guidance for health care management.

“Veterans having access across the board to mobile and web health app services increases interoperability and eases the flow of information, while keeping their personal data secure,” said Robert Wilkie, VA secretary and a 2019 Wash100 Award recipient.

Ball Corp. Awards 5 Aluminum Packaging Plants for 2019 Sustainability Performance; Bjoern Kulmann Quoted

Ball Corporation has announced the five aluminum packaging plants with the most significant operational and social sustainability improvements in 2019, the company reported on Tuesday.

“In our ongoing efforts to further enhance the sustainability credentials of aluminum packaging, all of our operations are continuously seeking opportunities to achieve zero accidents, minimize environmental impacts, support their local communities, and educate consumers about the importance of beverage and aerosol can recycling,” said Bjoern Kulmann, director, global sustainability.

The selected plants include progress across the areas with the most significant sustainability impact across Ball’s operations such as safety, energy, water and waste, as well as the promotion of aluminum packaging’s sustainability credentials and engagement in their local communities.

Ball will award one plant in each region of its Global Beverage Packaging and one plant in its Aerosol Packaging businesses with the 2019 R. David Hoover Sustainability Award. Of the awardees, Global Beverage Packaging, a Kapolei, Hawaii-based beverage packaging company.

The Kapolei plant set a plant record for electricity and gas efficiency in January 2019 and, during the year, saved Ball more than $1 million through energy efficiency projects. Kapolei has also completed 3 water efficiency projects, which resulted in a 30 percent reduction in normalized water usage between 2018 and 2019.

The second company, based in Buenos Aires, Argentina has continued to improve efficiency across Ball’s Big 6 categories since 2014. Between 2018 and 2019, Buenos Aires reduced total waste 15 percent, increased recycling 4 percent and decreased water usage by more than 3 percent in 2019. Buenos Aires also demonstrated an “exceptional” willingness to participate in innovative projects, and share best practices and provide assistance to other Ball plants.

The Gelsenkirchen in Gelsenkirchen, Germany, has improved across Ball’s Big 6 categories, achieving zero total recordable incidents, improving electricity efficiency by nearly 5 percent, natural gas efficiency by 12 percent and water efficiency by 6% in 2019.

The plant also decreased its waste by 24 percent and was rated “excellent” for its ongoing improvement and commitment to efficiency projects, as well as dedication supporting others. Gelsenkirchen also excelled in driving BPEMEA’s Aluminium Stewardship Initiative (ASI) certification.

The Yangon, Myanmar plant has consistently improved its electricity efficiency since 2016, improving by nearly 23 percent in 2019 by implementing several energy efficiency projects. The plant also improved its overall safety culture with improved reporting and a greater focus on corrective actions.

The San Luis Potosí, Mexico plant attained zero total recordable incidents for the year. As Ball’s most electricity efficient aerosol plant in 2018, San Luis Potosí reduced its electricity intensity by another almost 5 percent in 2019, improving its electricity efficiency by 10.4 percent since 2016. The plant also launched a campaign to educate the public about aluminum’s sustainability credentials and to increase recycling rates.

“We have seen fantastic results and impacts by each of our plants in 2019 and congratulate these five plants who went above and beyond in their commitment to sustainability,” added Kulmann.

George Jon Selects Datadobi to Provide Standard Data Migration Tool; Jordan McQuown, Carl D’Halluin Quoted

George Jon has selected Datadobi as its standard data migration tool based on performance, Datadobi announced on Tuesday.

“In searching for best-of-breed migration technology, we evaluated a number of vendors and Datadobi not only provided the most accomplished and powerful set of capabilities, but we have been working very effectively with their team to provide George Jon clients with excellent service,” explained Jordan McQuown, VP of Technology at George Jon. “We look forward to building on the success of projects already completed and building a long-term relationship.”

With the selection, Datadobi will provide faster data transfer rates, simplify use and enable monitor migration activity from a centralized console, saving time for the George Jon team and its customers. Datadobi’s comprehensive reporting capabilities will support George Jon’s ability to simplify file management throughout the migration process.

The George Jon eDiscovery platform will enable scalable, performant and cost-effective discovery, governance and investigation platforms for eDiscovery users worldwide. By taking a highly complicated, mission-critical data discovery program and making it easier, less expensive and faster, Datadobi’s solution will drive bottom-line value and allow users to focus on core business.

The announcement has followed the recent launch of Datadobi DobiMigrate 5.8, which will deliver an enhanced chain of custody that will prove every document, file or electronic object as an exact copy of its counterpart on the source system at the time of cutover, enabling organizations to move or merge unstructured data between platforms.

“George Jon are innovative leaders in their field and it’s a great vote of confidence in Datadobi that they have selected our technology,” said Carl D’Halluin, CTO of Datadobi. “Data migration is a key requirement for many of their clients who need the reliable, fast, and accurate transfer processes we provide as part of their eDiscovery strategy.”

Datadobi has continued to expand its technology offerings, becoming a leader in the technology sector. In addition to its selection by George Jon, the company has been added to the federal government’s list of technology vendors on the Solutions for Enterprise-Wide Procurement vehicle, the company reported in April 2020.

The governmentwide acquisition contract is authorized by the Office of Management and Budget and managed by NASA to guide how the agencies purchase technology offerings. Datadobi’s SEWP-authorized status will enable the company’s entry into the federal information technology market. The program is designed to inform the process for customers to procure IT equipment and services from authorized providers and resellers.

The company designed its software to help users manage the large-scale migrations that come with system refreshes and noted it seeks to help customer agencies to address IT modernization goals.

“Through SEWP, we have the opportunity to make our software available to federal government resellers for consideration of technologies needed for their projects. This strengthens our competitiveness in the federal verticals and makes available to agencies and contractors the Datadobi enterprise-class software they’ll need as they transition to new storage technologies,” said D’Halluin.

About Datadobi

Datadobi, a global leader in data management and storage software solutions, brings order to unstructured storage environments so that the enterprise can realize the value of their expanding universe of data. Their software allows customers to migrate, archive, and protect data while discovering insights and putting them to work for their business. Datadobi takes the pain and risk out of the data storage process, and does it ten times faster than other solutions at the best economic cost point. Founded in 2010, Datadobi is a privately held company headquartered in Leuven, Belgium, New York, and Melbourne.

AWS Launches Region in Italy to Expand Cloud Global Footprint; Peter DeSantis Quoted

Amazon Web Services (AWS) has announced the opening of the AWS Europe, Milan Region, marking the sixth AWS Region in Europe alongside Dublin, Frankfurt, London, Paris, and Stockholm, the company reported on Tuesday.

“Cloud technology has been a key part of the transformation of industries across Italy – from automotive and utilities, to manufacturing and retail, and so much more. With the new AWS Milan Region we look forward to supporting even more customers as they grow their organizations and innovate for their users across virtually all industries,” said Peter DeSantis, Senior Vice President of Global Infrastructure and Customer Support, Amazon Web Services.

The developers, startups, and enterprises, as well as government, education and non-profit organizations will be able to run applications and serve end-users from data centers located in Italy and leverage advanced AWS technologies to drive innovation.

The AWS Milan Region has three Availability Zones. Each zone has independent power, cooling and physical security and is connected via redundant, ultra-low-latency networking. AWS customers focused on high availability will be able to design applications and run in multiple Availability Zones to achieve even greater fault-tolerance.

Customers building applications that comply with the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) have access to another secure AWS infrastructure region in the European Union (EU) that meets the highest levels of security, compliance and data protection.

The Milan Region will also add to AWS’s ongoing investment in Italy. AWS first established a presence in the country in 2012, with the launch of an AWS Edge location in Milan, followed by an AWS office in the city in 2014 and Rome in 2016.

The facilities have added significant and growing teams of account managers, business development managers, customer services representatives, partner managers, professional services consultants, solutions architects, technical account managers and more to help customers of all sizes as they move to the cloud.

In addition,  in 2016, AWS acquired Asti-based company NICE Software located in Piedmont. In 2017, an Edge location was opened in Palermo and in 2019, an AWS Direct Connect endpoint launched in Milan, helping customers establish a dedicated network connection from their premises to AWS.

Later in 2019, AWS launched two additional Edge locations in Milan and one in Rome. These investments are in addition to the thousands of permanent jobs and over €4 billion of investment from Amazon, since 2010.

“AWS customers in Italy are among the most creative and innovative organizations that we support anywhere in the world, and we are always inspired by the work they do with our technology,” DeSantis added.

About Amazon Web Services

For 14 years, Amazon Web Services has been the world’s most comprehensive and broadly adopted cloud platform. AWS offers over 175 fully featured services for compute, storage, databases, networking, analytics, robotics, machine learning and artificial intelligence (AI), Internet of Things (IoT), mobile, security, hybrid, virtual and augmented reality (VR and AR), media, and application development, deployment, and management from 76 Availability Zones (AZs) within 24 geographic regions, with announced plans for nine more Availability Zones and three more AWS Regions in Indonesia, Japan, and Spain. Millions of customers—including the fastest-growing startups, largest enterprises, and leading government agencies—trust AWS to power their infrastructure, become more agile, and lower costs.
