CMMC Accreditation Body to Host 'National Conversation' Webinars

The accreditation body for the Department of Defense’s Cybersecurity Maturity Model Certification program will hold a series of webinars starting April 6 to discuss details about third-party assessment organizations and other topics about CMMC, Nextgov reported Thursday.

“As this work continues, we are listening for, and depend upon, your feedback. We encourage you to participate in the National Conversations and our newly-formed Working Groups to help us shape the CMMC ecosystem,” the CMMC-AB wrote in its email to stakeholders.

CMMC-AB expects the certification and training framework document and other deliverables to be ready by April 17 and the outline of exam for auditors by April 30.

Working groups should have evaluated a provisional definition for the CMMC assessment method and provided feedback on the methodology by the end of April.

The body has set an April 15 deadline for applications to the working group that will be in charge of the development of exam questions for auditors. Those exam questions are expected to be ready by May 27.

Army Tackles Project on Autonomous Threat Recognition Vehicles

The U.S. Army has commenced efforts to develop air and ground vehicles that detect threats via artificial intelligence, Inside Defense reported Wednesday.

The service branch’s AI Task Force aims to develop a system of vehicles designed to autonomously gather threat data under the Aided Threat Recognition from Mobile Cooperative and Autonomous Sensors effort.

The project also seeks to drive down the reconnaissance work of deployed soldiers.

Brig. Gen. Matt Easley, the task force’s director, said his team is exploring various data collection applications of autonomous systems on the battlefield.

“The key research problem that we’re looking at is how to get those autonomous systems to work to create a [common] operating picture,” Easley said in an interview with Inside Defense.

The COVID-19 pandemic has caused the Army to move a initial network test under the effort from this month to June, with a demonstration scheduled for September.

NASA Eyes Changes to Human Spaceflight Unit, Commercial Services Contracts

NASA is looking to restructure its Human Exploration and Operations directorate which could lead to changes in the Artemis mission to the moon slated for 2024, SpaceNews reported Wednesday.

Craig Kundrot, director of NASA’s space life and physical sciences research and applications division, said at a prior online industry event that the proposed reorganization follows the appointment of Doug Loverro as the HEO directorate’s associate administrator.

In July 2019, NASA Administrator and a previous Wash100 Award recipient Jim Bridenstine announced plans to make changes to HEO’s leadership team in an effort to meet Artemis’ 2024 deadline.

The HEO mission directorate oversees Artemis as well as other programs supporting the International Space Station. The Artemis effort encompasses a range of other programs including the Orion crew vehicle, Space Launch System and commercial crew efforts.

NASA expects to announce the HEO restructuring as well as changes to lunar lander contracts in the coming weeks.

Gen. David L. Goldfein, U.S. Air Force chief of staff and 2020 Wash100 Award recipient, said the service branch has been working to improve the protection of airmen against the COVID-19 outbreak.

Speaking virtually with the Mitchell Institute for Aerospace Studies, he said USAF has made practice adjustments to address the pandemic’s effects on readiness and ensure the required work continues, the service branch said Wednesday.

USAF’s missile activities have undergone changes for continued operation. The service branch has also implemented disinfection efforts, cancellation of exercises and travel, temperature checks and strict observance of social distancing guidelines.

Goldfein predicts that the pandemic will continue to pose problems in the long term and has advised commanders to maintain readiness. He also emphasized USAF’s responsibility to maintain the readiness of ground-based missiles and bomber aircraft that compose two-thirds of the U.S. nuclear triad.

The Department of Defense (DoD) has assigned the National Institute of Standards and Technology to help create requirements for independent assessors under the department’s Cybersecurity Maturity Model Certification program, FedScoop reported Wednesday.

The CMMC accreditation board will remain as the main entity for overseeing training and certification for third-party evaluators, according to the report. Katie Arrington, chief information security officer for defense acquisition and sustainment and 2020 Wash100 Award winner, said the CMMC board will also have the authority to make modifications to the credentialing process.

She noted that NIST will work to prevent conflicts in the certification process in line with the board’s “very stringent ethical rules”. DoD plans to implement CMMC standards in requests for information ahead of integration into contract bids in October, said Arrington.

SpaceX Dragon Resupply Returns to Earth from ISS, Bringing New Experiments

SpaceX’s Dragon resupply spacecraft will leave the International Space Station (ISS), carrying over 4,000 pounds of scientific experiments and other cargo, on Monday, April 6. NASA Television and the agency’s website will broadcast its departure live beginning at 9:30 a.m. EDT, the company announced on Thursday.

Robotic flight controllers at mission control in Houston will issue commands at 9:52 a.m. to release Dragon using the station’s Canadarm2 robotic arm. NASA Expedition 62 Flight Engineer, Drew Morgan, will back up the ground controllers and monitor Dragon’s systems as it leaves the orbital laboratory.

The spacecraft will transport scientific investigations to Earth, including generating a nutritional meal, toward printing human organs in space and helping the heart. The nutritional meal experiment has examined ways to supply food for a multi-year mission on the Moon or Mars may require making food and nutrients in space.

BioNutrients has demonstrated a technology that enables on-demand production of nutrients needed during long-duration space missions. Although designed for space, this system also could help provide nutrition for people in remote areas of our planet.

The printing human organs in space will look into the biological printing of the tiny, complex structures found inside human organs, such as capillaries, which are difficult in Earth’s gravity. The BioFabrication Facility (BFF) has attempted to take the first steps toward the printing of human organs and tissues in microgravity

The Engineered Heart Tissues (EHTs) study has examined how human heart tissue functions in space. It uses unique 3D tissues made from heart cells derived from human-induced Pluripotent Stem Cells (hiPSCs), essentially adult stem cells.

Researchers expect significant differences in function, structure and gene expression between EHTs in microgravity and those on the ground. Understanding these differences could help them find ways to prevent or mitigate problematic changes on future long-duration missions.

About ISS

For almost 20 years, humans have lived and worked continuously aboard the International Space Station, advancing scientific knowledge and demonstrating new technologies, making research breakthroughs not possible on Earth that will enable long-duration human and robotic exploration into deep space. As a global endeavor, 239 people from 19 countries have visited the unique microgravity laboratory that has hosted more than 2,800 research investigations from researchers in 108 countries.

Academy training courses will prepare professionals for the roles required to build an RPA Center of Excellence (CoE) within an organization, including RPA developers, solution architects, infrastructure engineers, implementation managers and business analysts.

UiPath has also offered a free online RPA training platform that will provide practical exercises to support learning. In addition to an improved user experience, new learning paths are now available for all CoE roles and at both certification levels.

UiPath has also launched “Reboot Your Skills Program,” a four-week learning sprint for professionals that want to develop in-demand RPA skills. The program has included a tailored UiPath Academy learning plan with free, on-demand courses, a community of students to collaborate with and office hours with RPA experts in multiple time zones.

“UiPath’s training and certification program has enabled me to upskill my RPA knowledge and helped me to keep up with the rapid pace of new developments. This was crucial for me in my role as the Head of Delivery for Roboyo as it helped me to be up to date and as involved in the technology as possible. I would not be where I am today without the UiPath Academy and its community,” Frank Schikora, UiPath MVP & Head of Delivery, Roboyo said.
