The Office of Management and Budget has called for additional work on the part of federal agencies in order to further defend federal systems, networks and data from threats.

OMB said Friday it coordinated with the White House’s National Security Council and the Department of Homeland Security throughout fiscal year 2015 to implement initiatives meant to bolster federal cybersecurity policies, procedures and practices.

OMB noted a number of those cybersecurity initiatives such as the evidence-based CyberStat Reviews to hold agencies accountable for their cyber posture, the Cybersecurity Sprint to further protect federal information and assets and the $19 billion in funding under President Barack Obama’s FY 2017 budget request for cybersecurity resources.

“While this funding is a necessary investment to secure our nation in the future, we must continue to improve agencies’ resilience to cybersecurity incidents in the near term,” OMB said.

OMB also cited the Senior Agency Official for Privacy’s reviews that call for federal agencies “to take steps to analyze and address privacy risks and ensure privacy protections are in place throughout systems’ life cycles.”

The FBI and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administrationt have released a public service announcement that seeks to raise awareness on cybersecurity threats linked to Internet-connected devices in motor vehicles.

That PSA posted Thursday says threat actors can remotely attack a vehicle’s electronic control unit through the use of vulnerabilities in third-party devices connected to the vehicle’s diagnostics ports.

The agencies have asked car owners to verify the authenticity of software update notifications from manufacturers and exercise caution when establishing third-party device connections in order to reduce cyber risks in their vehicles.

Vehicle owners should also be aware of individuals that have physical access to the vehicle and avoid unauthorized alterations to vehicle software, according to the PSA.

In case of a hacking incident, vehicle owners are advised to check for vehicle recall updates, contact the manufacturer or authorized dealer and file a complaint with the FBI and NHTSA.

The First Responder Network Authority has unveiled the agency’s blog on the Tumblr social networking website as part of an effort to share information with first responders via audio, video and social media posts.

FirstNet’s Kyle Richardson wrote in a blog post published Thursday the agency aims to share multimedia content and reach a wider audience through Tumblr and other websites.

“The pure goal of our mission as an agency is to put mobile technology in the hands of first responders — so our content must be mobile-friendly,” he added.

FirstNet’s focus on mobility and videos follows a recent discussion between the agency and Tumblr centered on statistical data that indicate 66 percent of users view content via mobile devices and 95 percent of content is accessed via shares, according to Richardson.

He wrote that the Tumblr site will also work to help FirstNet engage with local, tribal, state and federal public safety organizations and professionals, some of whom use the platform.

Navy Adm. Michael Rogers, chief of U.S. Cyber Command, said Cybercom has seen an escalation in cyber operations by other countries and nonstate actors against U.S. government and private sector networks over the past year, DoD News reported Friday.

Terri Moon Cronk writes Rogers gave the remarks Wednesday as he testified before the House Armed Services Committee’s emerging threats and capabilities panel on the Defense Department’s fiscal 2017 budget request for Cybercom.

“They steal intellectual property, citizens’ personal information, and they have intruded into networks ranging from the Joint Staff’s unclassified network to networks controlling our nation’s critical infrastructure,” Rogers said.

Rogers, who is also director of the National Security Agency and chief of the Central Security Service, noted that Cybercom is on the lookout for signs of how Russia, China, Iran and North Korea as well as the Islamic State militant group work to improve their cyber capabilities.

Rogers, an inductee into Executive Mosaic’s Wash100 for 2016, told subcommittee members the 133 teams that comprise the command’s cyber mission force work to support the U.S. Central Command’s campaign against the Islamic State group.

He also cited the efforts of the Joint Force Headquarters DoD Information Networks to protect the Pentagon’s computer networks and data from potential cyber threats, according to the report.

The First Responder Network Authority has reported updates on its strategic road map toward the initial launch of the Nationwide Public Safety Broadband Network.

Officials from FirstNet discussed completed activities under the road map — such as the request for proposal process, consultation, standards development and state plans — during the quarterly board and committee meetings, the group said Wednesday.

“As we enter the next phase of the road map, continued collaboration will be crucial to delivering the best, most cost effective nationwide network to public safety as quickly as possible,” said FirstNet President TJ Kennedy.

FirstNet also unveiled the Band 14 Spectrum Relocation Grant Program, which seeks to provide financial help to select public safety groups ahead of the NPSBN deployment.

The FirstNet board established the strategic road map during a board meeting in March 2014 to create a timeline for the network deployment.
