NATO’s summit in Warsaw, Poland through July 8 and 9 will include definitions of cyber warfare as a discussion topic, Defense News reported Thursday.
Aaron Mehta writes a source involved in the planning of the summit disclosed that the alliance mulls over a change in its approach to cyber policies.
NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg previously said a cyberattack could lead to the invocation of Article 5, which constitutes collective defense, Mehta noted.
Mehta wrote the alliance’s challenges to definitions of cyber warfare responses include sanctions against civilian hackers; comparisons of damages and attacks on physical infrastructure; and whether responses should be virtual, kinetic or economic in nature.
