Tracee Boxley, acting chief information officer of the Government Publishing Office since November 2016, has been promoted to serve as GPO CIO on a full-time basis.

She has led the GPO’s technology infrastructure modernization, legacy system transformation and cybersecurity efforts over the past year, the agency said Thursday.

As CIO, Boxley will oversee policies and standards related to the procurement and implementation of information technology and telecommunications systems, as well as manage operating budgets for network IT systems in accordance with program plans and financial guidelines on the utilization of information resources.

“Tracee’s IT background and knowledge of GPO will provide leadership to this critical position, as the agency continues to meet the ever-changing technology requirements of Congress, Federal agencies, and the public,” said GPO Director Davita Vance-Cooks.

Boxley previously served as chief of the american housing survey division at the Census Bureau, deputy CIO and chief of the technical services division at the Food Nutrition Service and director of IT operations at the U.S. Army.

The Senate voted 52-41 Monday to confirm Ajit Pai for another five-year term as chairman of the Federal Communications Commission, Reuters reported Tuesday.

Pai said in a statement that he aims to continue focusing on “bridging the digital divide, promoting innovation, protecting consumers and public safety, and making the FCC more open and transparent.”

President Donald Trump appointed Pai as FCC chairman in January.

Pai joined the telecommunications regulatory agency in 2012 as a commissioner, after working as a partner at law firm Jenner and Block and as associate general counsel at Verizon.

The National Space Council will look to establish policies to reinvigorate the country’s space missions such as human exploration of the moon, Space News reported Thursday.

Vice President Mike Pence, chairman of the National Space Council, has asked NASA to develop plans for manned lunar missions that could also pave the way for a human expedition to Mars.

“The moon will be a stepping-stone, a training ground, a venue to strengthen our commercial and international partnerships as we refocus America’s space program toward human space exploration,” Pence told audience at inaugural meeting of the reconstituted NSC.

Pence urged the heads of the departments of Commerce and Transportation as well as the Office of Management and Budget to review the current regulatory framework for commercial space.

H.R. McMaster, U.S. national security adviser, said that NSC will also create a space strategic framework designed to support the country’s interests and encourage international cooperation in the space arena.

The Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee has approved a bill, sponsored by Sens. Rob Portman (R-Ohio) and Maggie Hassan (D-New Hampshire),  that would establish a bug bounty pilot program at the Department of Homeland Security.

The Hack Department of Homeland Security Act would allow DHS to enlist the help of ethical hackers to find previously undiscovered vulnerabilities within the department’s information technology and networks, According to an article published Wednesday on Portman’s website.

Hassan’s office said in May a DHS bug bounty program will be based on a similar initiative of the Defense Department and hire the services of “white-hat” hackers and technology firms such as Amazon, Apple, Facebook and Google.

Portman said that incentivizing ethical private-sector hackers can help DHS identify network vulnerabilities before potential adversaries exploit security flaws.

“What we propose is basically taking the Pentagon model,” Portman told Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee members during the panel’s markup of the bill Wednesday.

“What it says is that you actually bring in the White Hats, the hackers that are good at what they do, and try to find vulnerabilities in the system,” Portman added.

Sens. Clair McCaskill (D-Missouri) and Kamala Harris (D-California) are co-sponsors of the Hack DHS Act.

Christopher Krebs, acting undersecretary of the Department of Homeland Security‘s cybersecurity and critical infrastructure division, has said that DHS created a task force that will oversee the security of state and local voting systems, Nextgov reported Tuesday.

He told the House Homeland Security Committee’s cybersecurity subcomittee during a hearing held Tuesday the task force will gather expertise and resources from various DHS units such as the intelligence and analysis division.

Krebs said the transition of election security efforts from DHS’ infrastructure protection division to the newly established group will help the department simplify the allocation of funds for initiatives that aim to protect infrastructure for congressional and other elections.
