Gen. Darren McDew: Commercial Network Vulnerability Poses National Security Threat

Gen. Darren McDew: Commercial Network Vulnerability Poses National Security ThreatGen. Darren McDew, commander of the U.S. Transportation Command, has told House lawmakers that he believes a cybersecurity gap between military and commercial networks can pose a threat to national security, Federal News Radio reported Thursday.

Scott Maucione writes McDew said at a joint hearing of the House Armed Services’ readiness and seapower and projection forces subcommittees Thursday that the rest of the federal government does not get the same level of cyber protection as the Defense Department.

“The seam that exists between [DoD] and [the Department of Homeland Security] is a real seam for us because 90 percent of my activity on a daily basis runs through the commercial networks,” McDew told the subcommittees.

“We are becoming more and more vulnerable because those commercial assets are part of national security,” he added, according to the station.

He noted companies do not have the same cyber defense assets as military organizations and that businesses should implement strategies to strengthen enterprise cybersecurity.
