The Department of Defense announced that the Biden administration authorized an additional $400 million in security assistance to help Ukraine counter Russian invasion.
Todd Breasseale, acting press secretary at the Pentagon, said in a statement published Friday the latest package brings the total U.S. security assistance to Ukraine to approximately $8 billion since the start of the administration and marks the 15th drawdown of military equipment from DOD inventories for the Eastern European country since August 2021.
Military capabilities in the security assistance package include High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems and additional ammunition for HIMARS; tactical vehicles for equipment recovery; 155mm artillery ammunition; demolition munitions; counter-battery systems; and spare parts and other equipment.
DOD News reported the security assistance includes 1,000 rounds of 155 mm artillery described as having greater precision.
“It offers Ukraine precise … capability for specific targets. It will save ammunition. It will be more effective due to the precision. It’s a further evolution in our support for Ukraine in this battle in the Donbas,” a senior defense official said of the 155mm artillery ammunition.
