USAFE Implements Simulation Platform for Joint Terminal Attack Controllers

USAFE Implements Simulation Platform for Joint Terminal Attack ControllersThe U.S. Air Forces in Europe has started to operate a domed simulator built to support training for joint terminal attack controllers at the Warrior Preparation Center located within Einsiedlerhof Air Station in Germany.

The Joint Terminal Control Training and Rehearsal System is designed to train JTACs in the areas of close air support, terminal control, terminal guidance and joint fires operations, the Air Force said Friday.

JTACs are trained to direct aircraft during close air support missions.

The simulator is equipped with 4K projectors that work to offer a 270-degree field of view for trainees and can be used in conjunction with simulation-integrated binoculars, night vision and M4 carbine, the Air Force noted.

WPC plans to use the platform in future JTAC drills such as the Spartan Eagle exercise.

Trump Approves Cybersecurity Resource Bill for State, Local Law Enforcement Agencies

Trump Approves Cybersecurity Resource Bill for State, Local Law Enforcement AgenciesPresident Donald Trump has signed into law a bill, authored by Rep. John Ratcliffe (R-Texas), that provides tools and training services for state and local law enforcement personnel to fight cyber crime.

The Strengthening State and Local Cyber Crime Fighting Act of 2017 also allocates funds to the National Computer Forensics Institute that functions as a cybercrime training center for law enforcement officers throughout the U.S., according to a press release published Thursday.

NCFI has trained approximately 7,000 local officials from more than 2,000 agencies across 50 states and three U.S. territories.

“I’d like to thank President Trump for his strong support of my bill to ensure our state and local law enforcement officials are properly equipped to address and prosecute crimes in the 21st century,” said Ratcliffe.

NASA to Integrate 23 Cameras Into Mars 2020 Rover

NASA to Integrate 23 Cameras Into Mars 2020 RoverNASA plans to incorporate a total of 23 cameras into the Mars 2020 Rover system designed to investigate the red planet’s atmosphere and support science instruments as part of the exploration mission.

The space agency said Wednesday the Mars 2020 Rover being built at Jet Propulsion Laboratory in California will feature nine engineering cameras, seven science cameras and another seven cameras for entry, descent and landing operations.

Mastcam-Z is one of the science cameras that NASA plans to integrate into Mars 2020 and is designed to collect 3D images of the planet’s geologic qualities.

“Routinely using 3D images at high resolution could pay off in a big way,” said Jim Bell, principal investigator from Arizona State University for the rover’s Mastcam-Z camera.

“They’re useful for both long-range and near-field science targets,” Bell added.

The agency has updated Navcam and Hazcam engineering cameras that will work to help the rover gather color images with a resolution of 20 megapixels.

NASA also plans to use the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter, European Space Agency’s Trace Gas Orbiter, Maven and other orbiting spacecraft as data relays for the rover during the mission’s first two years.

Report: Trump Mulls UAE’s Classified Briefing Request Over F-35 Procurement

Report: Trump Mulls UAE’s Classified Briefing Request Over F-35 Procurement

Report: Trump Mulls UAE’s Classified Briefing Request Over F-35 ProcurementThe White House has agreed to assess the United Arab Emirates’ request to begin discussions on the Middle Eastern country’s plan to buy Lockheed Martin-built F-35 fighter jets from the U.S. government, Defense News reported Saturday.

President Donald Trump’s plan to consider UAE’s request for a classified briefing over F-35s deviates from the Obama administration’s Qualitative Military Edge policy with Israel.

QME seeks to provide military assistance and weapons systems to Israel to help the country build up its national defense against regional threats on a unilateral basis.

The report said the plan to consider talks with UAE also reflects the U.S. government’s intent to honor the U.S.-UAE Defense Cooperation Agreement signed in May.

“The Trump team has agreed to consider the request,” a former Defense Department official told Defense News.

“It’s not a ‘yes’ yet, but I’m pretty sure it’s going to happen once the dust settles,” added the official, who was alluding to the rift between Qatar and other Middle Eastern countries such as UAE, Bahrain and Saudi Arabia.

Navy’s 40 Cyber Mission Force Teams Reach Full Operational Capability Status

Navy’s 40 Cyber Mission Force Teams Reach Full Operational Capability StatusThe U.S. Navy’s 40 cyber mission force teams obtained full operational capability designation in October, the Defense Department reported Thursday.

The service’s CMF teams achieved the FOC status after the U.S. Cyber Command conducted a validation process on Oct. 6 to assess whether the units meet training, capability and manning requirements, officials with the U.S. Fleet Cyber Command’s U.S. 10th fleet said.

The FOC milestone seeks to reflect the completion of at least 18,000 courses and 2,000 hours of full-spectrum operations involving approximately 1,800 personnel, the officials added.

“Although reaching this milestone is a great accomplishment, the true challenge will be sustaining readiness and the prompt ability to ‘answer all bells’ when directed by U.S. Cyber Command,” said Vice Adm. Michael Gilday, chief of the U.S. Fleet Cyber Command/U.S. 10th Fleet.

The CMF team’s focus aligns with DoD’s cyber strategy that seeks to defend U.S. critical infrastructure and networks as well as support the joint military commander’s goals.

Cybercom Declares Full Operational Capability for Army Cyber Mission Force Teams

Cybercom Declares Full Operational Capability for Army Cyber Mission Force TeamsThe U.S. Army‘s 41 Cyber Mission Force teams have achieved “full operational capability” status from the U.S. Cyber Command.

The Army said Thursday the grant follows the teams’ required completion of multiple training courses on cyberspace operation areas such as planning, network operations and architecture, detailed software analysis and development.

The series of training courses aims to ensure Cyber Mission Force readiness.

U.S. Cyber Command formed the teams to defend Defense Department networks, ensure data security, support military goals and protect U.S. critical infrastructure.

The teams are divided into two classifications: Cyber Protection Teams and offensive mission teams.

Additionally, the Army plans to establish 21 more CPTs from the U.S. Army National Guard and U.S. Army Reserve.

U.S. Army Cyber Command administers electronic warfare, information and cyberspace operations to protect the country.

The first Cyber Mission Force team became full operational in 2014.

GSA’s Jon Johnson: Category Mgmt Helped Govt Achieve $500M in Mobile Tech Savings

GSA's Jon Johnson: Category Mgmt Helped Govt Achieve $500M in Mobile Tech SavingsJon Johnson, director of the General Services Administration‘s enterprise mobility program, has said that the interagency Mobile Service Category Management Team helped government agencies save approximately $500 million on mobile devices and services, Federal News Radio reported Thursday.

Government-wide spending on mobile platforms and services decreased from $1.5 billion in 2013 to $947 million annually as of 2015, the report noted.

Johnson told Federal News Radio that the cost savings were driven by various factors, such as increased competition in the marketplace and the efforts of MSCT.

He added that the cost reductions primarily resulted from responsible pricing, lower costs and optimized device management.

Johnson noted that MSCT will partner with stakeholders in 2018 to review the mobile computing decision framework; address security issues associated with mobile voice communications; and provide additional tools and guidance on the use of mobile services and applications for a distributed workforce.

Gen. Joseph Dunford: US, South Korea, Japan Need Trilateral Cooperation to Stop North Korea’s Nuclear Threat
Joseph Dunford

Marine Corps Gen. Joseph Dunford, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, has said defense leaders from the U.S., Japan and South Korea agreed trilateral and multilateral cooperation is needed among the three countries to counter North Korea’s ballistic missile and nuclear threats, DoD News reported Tuesday.

“That includes missile defense and any planning and focus on the nuclear threat posed by North Korea,” Dunford said Sunday during a meeting at U.S. Pacific Command’s headquarters in Hawaii.

Dunford met with Adm. Katsutoshi Kawano, Japan’s self-defense force chief of staff; and Gen. Jeong Kyeong-doo, chairman of South Korea’s joint chiefs of staff; to discuss the threat posed by North Korea.

“Essentially, in the next year the chiefs of defense agreed to improve ballistic missile defenses, all wrapped up with better sharing of data, and to conduct routine exercises to ensure we have a coherent collective response to ballistic missile defense,” Dunford told reporters after the meeting.

He also cited the potential role of multilateralism in anti-submarine warfare, disaster response and maritime interdiction exercises.

The military leaders also agreed to conduct two meetings in the coming year, the report added.

Report: DOJ Links Russian Officials to DNC Breach Incident

Report: DOJ Links Russian Officials to DNC Breach IncidentThe Justice Department has identified and associated at least six Russian government officials with the breach of the Democratic National Committee’s computers during the U.S. presidential election in 2016, The Wall Street Journal reported Thursday.

Sources told the publication U.S. prosecutors and federal agents have amassed evidence that could be used to file charges against the Russian officials and plan to file a case with the court in 2018.

The potential filing of a case against the identified Russian officials would not guarantee their arrests or imprisonment but could potentially make traveling a challenge for them, according to Reuters citing the WSJ report.

DOJ and Robert Mueller, federal special counsel who was appointed in May to lead the probe into Russia’s alleged interference into the U.S. presidential elections, agreed to permit the original team of prosecutors and agents to oversee the cyber investigation, Reuters noted.
