A State Department official has said that President Donald Trump’s administration will formulate its own strategy for the Asia-Pacific region, Defense News reported Tuesday.

Aaron Mehta writes Susan Thornton, acting assistant secretary of state, told reporters Monday that the Trump administration will continue to “remain engaged and active in Asia.”

Former President Barack Obama had called his administration’s efforts to rebalance U.S. foreign policy towards the region as “pivot” to the Pacific.

“The Asian economy is very important for U.S. prosperity and growth, so we will be there working on fair trade and free trade issues, working on regional security challenges such as North Korea, and continue to press for a rules-based and constructive, peaceful and stable order in Asia,” Thornton said.

“Whether there will be a bumper sticker to put on that, it’s still early days, so it’s early to say,” she added, according to the report.

The Department of Homeland Security has tested face recognition algorithms using video data to support potential law enforcement applications.

DHS said Tuesday its science and technology directorate worked with the National Institute of Standards and Technology to independently evaluate 36 face recognition algorithms as part of the Face in Video Evaluation program.

FIVE used video sequences collected in 2013 at the Toyota Center multipurpose stadium in Kennewick, Washington, as well as video and camera positioning data from the Homeland Security Advanced Research Projects Agency’s Apex Air Entry/Exit Re-engineering initiative.

Volunteers participated in data collection efforts at the Toyota Center and simulated three operational settings including unidirectional crowd flow, bi-directional crowd flow and winding queue, DHS noted.

The department also released a report on the findings from the FIVE program.

DHS made the report to help law enforcement officials explore and buy technologies that can help address their organizations’ face detection and recognition needs.

The U.S. Army has moved to deploy a military unmanned aerial system group in South Korea to support intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance missions on the Korean Peninsula.

Army’s 2nd Combat Aviation Brigade will oversee the Gray Eagle UAS unit at Kunsan air base, U.S. Forces Korea said Sunday.

The Gray Eagle drone, manufactured by General Atomics‘ aeronautical systems business, is based on the Predator UAS and designed to carry multiple payloads such as electro-optical/infrared technology, Hellfire missiles and a synthetic aperture radar communications relay.

A bipartisan group of 58 legislators has sent a letter to the House Appropriations Committee’s homeland security subpanel to oppose the White House’s plan to implement a $1.3 billion reduction in the U.S. Coast Guard’s budget, Defense News reported Monday.

The lawmakers led by Rep. Duncan Hunter (R-California), chairman of the House Coast Guard and Maritime subcommittee, said in the letter that OMB’s proposed cut to the Coast Guard’s budget “should be dismissed” since it contradicts President Donald Trump’s aim to rebuild the military.

“Our recommendation is that OMB’s financial outline, specific to the Coast Guard, be rejected on the grounds that, if implemented, it would serve to the detriment of U.S. national security and create exposures that will most certainly be exploited by transnational criminal networks and other dangerous actors,” the lawmakers added.

Trump is expected Thursday to file with Congress the administration’s 2018 budget proposal that seeks to implement a $54 billion increase in defense discretionary spending, according to the report.

The U.S. Navy has introduced a leader development framework implementation plan that would offer guidance on how the military branch should help its leaders build character and achieve operational excellence.

The framework titled “A Design for Maintaining Maritime Superiority” was designed with a focus on strengthening and broadening leadership development programs across the Navy, the service branch said Friday.

The Naval War College will partner with the Naval Leadership and Ethics Center to support community leads that have been listed in a Navadmin 060/17 message as well as create a Navy-wide leader development strategy that reaches beyond the major command level.

“We must continue to train our Sailors to be leaders who think clearly, learn rapidly and exemplify character and integrity,” said Vice Adm. Robert Burke, chief of naval personnel.

Navy’s Leader Development Continuum Council, led by the NWC president, also plans to hold monthly meetings to discuss best practices and feedback on proposed leadership development strategies and programs.
