Idaho National Laboratory Accepts New Supercomputer for Nuclear Modeling

Idaho National Laboratory has received delivery of a new supercomputer designed to generate modeling for the development of future nuclear applications. The $19.2 million Sawtooth computer would help INL researchers virtually test new designs for reactors and fuels via simulation, the laboratory said Wednesday.

Researchers will receive access to Sawtooth in early 2020, allowing for development with reduced physical resource costs. Sawtooth is currently INL’s fastest supercomputer. John Wagner, who serves as associate laboratory director of INL’s nuclear science and technology directorate, noted that the supercomputer will vitally contribute to development activities at the National Reactor Innovation Center.

“With advanced modeling and simulation and the computing power now available, we expect to be able to dramatically shorten the time it takes to test, manufacture and commercialize new nuclear technologies,” Wagner said.

The Department of Energy’s Office of Nuclear Energy provided funds for Sawtooth.

DOE Unveils Funding Opportunity for Biology Research Software Tools

The Department of Energy intends to award $5M in funds to help universities and nonprofit research organizations develop computational tools and software applications that will work to study genomics and biology research data.

The research data will cover various areas in line with DOE energy and environmental missions such as microbes and plants in a move to develop a scientific framework for biofuel production, the department said Thursday.

DOE plans to incorporate the software tools into an open-source system designed to assist the biology research community

“New computational tools are clearly needed to harness this resource and transform this wealth of information into knowledge and insight,” said Sharlene Weatherwax, associate director of science for biological and environmental research at DOE.

Gov't Leaders Seek Declassification of US Space Programs

U.S. Air Force Secretary Barbara Barrett is calling on the Trump administration to declassify military space program information to help drive support from the public and intimidate adversaries, Defense News reported Sunday. Barrett told attendees at the Reagan National Defense Forum in California that “there is much more classified than what needs to be” but declassification must also ensure that certain information remains secret.

Rep. Mike Rogers, R-Ala., added that the overclassification of information has led to challenges in getting support from Congress and the public to create a Space Force.

“It’s not going to happen until they understand the threat and the dependence we have,” he said. “And I don’t think that can happen until we see significant declassification of what we’re doing in space and what China and Russia are doing, and how space is in their day to day lives.”

Barrett noted that the push for declassification will be a priority for her office moving forward.

Marine Corps Begins Creation of Naval Expeditionary Warfare Force; David Berger Quoted

The U.S. Marine Corps has started the development of a naval force that will work to carry out expeditionary warfare missions in austere locations in line with the National Defense Strategy.

USMC said Friday it eyes to study design options through wargame efforts to build a naval force that will establish assured access and sea denial operations for joint and fleet missions.

The service branch plans to train the equip warfighters with naval expeditionary force capacities to allow operations in contested areas. The Marine Corps also noted that the creation of a expeditionary warfare unit may yield disruptive engagements with oppposing forces.

“We will continue to rigorously wargame — and at a much-accelerated pace to facilitate learning,” said Gen. David Berger, commandant at the Marine Corps.

Sens. Jim Risch, Angus King Write to Address Huawei Energy Security Issue

Sens. Jim Risch, R-Idaho, and Angus King, I-Maine, have issued a letter to the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission on Chinese firm Huawei Technologies’ threat to the U.S. energy infrastructure.

The letter, addressed to FERC Chairman Neil Chatterjee, sought the commission’s help to secure the U.S. national critical infrastructure against Huawei-headed activities, Risch’s office said Friday.

The intelligence community has released warnings that Huawei has been working in connection with the Chinese Communist Party.

“Given FERC’s responsibility for overseeing the reliability of the electric grid, it is critical that your agency take steps to ensure that United States critical infrastructure and the electric grid remain protected from foreign intrusion,” the senators wrote in the letter.

The letter also discussed Huawei’s solar energy products that may still be operating with the U.S. energy grid and potential damages to the country’s electricity supply and energy security.

The following senators have also signed the letter:

  • Ben Sasse, R-Neb.
  • Joe Manchin, D-W.Va.
  • John Cornyn, R-Texas
  • Marco Rubio, R-Fla.
  • Mark Warner, D-Va.
  • Richard Burr, R-N.C.
  • Susan Collins, R-Maine
  • Tom Cotton, R-Ark.

Defense Digital Service Seeks to Expand Staff at Satellite Office in Georgia

The Defense Digital Service has opened a satellite office in Augusta, Ga., near the U.S. Army Cyber Command and Fort Gordon, Defense One reported Saturday.

The Augusta office, nicknamed “Tatooine”, is located at the Georgia Cyber Center and has a staff of around 15 full-time personnel. Rachel Breitfeller, communications director at DDS, said the Department of Defense unit is “actively hiring civilians” that will work on software development, design, product management and other digital-related activities.

“Our goal is for colleagues that work in Tatooine to touch projects that we take on regardless of location,” she said. “Our plan with Tatooine was to tap into the tech ecosystem and talent in Augusta and the surrounding areas, and create a secondary, accessible space that all colleagues would want to work out of.”

Defense Digital Service was launched in 2015, with Chris Lynch tapped to served as its director.

Bechtel, ENKA to Build 5G Motorway, Flood Defense System to Boost Serbian Economy; Mike Wilkinson Quoted

The government of Serbia has selected Bechtel and ENKA, working together in a joint venture, to construct a 70 mile, 5G-ready dual carriageway to connect the communities and businesses of Eastern Pojate to Western Preljina and enhance regional economic prospects, Bechtel announced on Friday.

A telecommunications corridor will be built beneath the side of the motorway to allow for future 5G fiber and tower installations. Construction is expected to begin in 2020.

In addition, the Bechtel ENKA team will also build a major flood defense system, the first of its scale in the Balkans, to protect the areas around the motorway from flooding, erosion and water pollution.

“We are delighted and honored to have been chosen by the Serbian Government to build this transformational motorway, our first in the country. It is thanks to their vision that we will be delivering much more than a road – the motorway will create a vital economic corridor as well as solve the challenge of flood protection and provide digital connectivity,”  said Mike Wilkinson, Bechtel’s general manager for Europe.

The flood defense system reflects Serbia’s goal to strengthen the national infrastructure’s resilience against extreme weather conditions.

As part of a wider regional transport plan, the motorway will also build economic ties to improve trade links throughout the Balkans and Western Europe. Approximately 10,000 jobs are projected to be created in Serbia during construction.

“The Bechtel ENKA team now looks forward to breaking ground, marking the start of a long-term partnership with Serbia to support world-class infrastructure that creates jobs, connects communities and grows the local economy,” Wilkinson added.

Bechtel, the first U.S. contractor to be involved in a major infrastructure project in Serbia, and ENKA’s partnership has developed roadways in the Balkan peninsula since the 1990’s in many of Serbia’s neighbors with over 15,000 miles of road built, 100 tunnels and 26 major bridges.
