WindstormThe National Institute of Standards and Technology plans to form an advisory panel that will support an inter-agency program that aims to reduce the loss of property and life from windstorms.

The deadline to nominate individuals for appointment to the committee is Aug. 19.

Congress designated NIST to lead efforts to implement windstorm risk reduction measures, develop performance-based engineering tools to minimize windstorm impact and coordinate post-windstorm investigations within the government.

NIST collaborates with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, National Science Foundation and the Federal Emergency Management Agency on the program.

The Federal Highway Administration, Department of Housing and Urban Development, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and Energy Department participate in NWIRP activities.

Participating agencies work to promote better building design and construction practices, conduct public outreach, and advocate windstorm preparedness and mitigation measures for households, businesses and communities.
