Ranks told attendees at a  Professional Services Council event that the DoD needs to focus on sending AI systems to live environments to gather data and further their development.

He added that the Pentagon’s new Joint AI Center intends to establish a “common foundation” that will serve as a basis for developing a set of capabilities that will address specific mission requirements.

“Although we do need to solve fundamental computer science problems with respect to AI, we also have to solve some very real and immediate cultural problems about the fielding of AI,” said Ranks.
