The governments of the U.S. and Australia have entered into agreements to deepen defense cooperation between the countries and increase American rotational presence and capabilities in Canberra, the Voice of America reported Saturday.
The agreements will enable additional visits by U.S. ships and maritime patrol and reconnaissance aircraft, more access to Australia’s military infrastructure, greater collaboration in space and accelerated efforts to help Australia procure its own nuclear-powered submarines.
Under the partnership, the U.S. will allow Australia to support the production of ammunition and missile systems including the Guided Multiple Launch Rocket Systems.
Officials said the U.S. also intends to support the Australian production of 155 mm artillery shells, which are in high demand in Ukraine.
“These initiatives will strengthen our ability to respond to crises in the region while enhancing our interoperability,” said Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin, a 2023 Wash100 awardee.
The agreements were announced at the 33rd annual Australia-United States Ministerial Consultations in Brisbane, Australia
