The General Services Administration has developed a new shared service program to help customer agencies manage and monitor their software investments, Eric Eskam, a GSA information technology specialist, wrote in a blog entry posted Tuesday.
Eskam said GSA will initially deploy its Software License Management-as-a-Service platform at the agency through a pilot program and incrementally offer SLMS to other agencies in fiscal 2017.
SLMS consists of technology and governance, processes and training services meant to increase chief information officers’ visibility into their software licensing activities.
GSA also seeks to help agencies collect and analyze data on software contracts and usage as well as avoid financial waste and cybersecurity threats caused by poor software asset management through the SLMS offering, Eksam noted.
He added the new service could serve as a foundation for interagency license transfers and governmentwide license agreements.
