Sean McAfee, deputy director of the national cybersecurity assessment and technical services at the Department of Homeland Security, has been appointed to lead of the cyber operations division of DHS’ new office in Silicon Valley, Federal News Radio reported Wednesday.
Jason Miller writes McAfee assumed his new role Feb. 2 and has started to pursue partnerships with cyber experts and local firms to develop new cyber technology platforms for deployment across government agencies.
McAfee joined DHS in 2008 and has spearheaded the department’s red team/penetration testing program.
Prior to DHS, he worked at the Department of Health and Human Services as a grants administration specialist.

Retired Vice Adm. Scott Pappano has been confirmed as principal deputy administrator for the National Nuclear Security Administration. According to Congress records, legislators voted 51-47 to appoint Pappano. He also confirmed his new position in a LinkedIn post Thursday. Who Is Scott Pappano? The General Services Administration and xAI have signed an agreement to make the latter’s Grok frontier artificial intelligence models available to federal agencies through March 2027.
