Engineer Nick Guertin: Open Systems Approach Supports DoD Procurement EffortsNick Guertin, senior software systems engineer at Carnegie Mellon University, said in an interview that the use of open systems generates market opportunities that helps Defense Department procurement, Federal News Radio reported Friday.

Guertin, who formerly held technology leadership roles at the U.S. Navy, cited the service branch’s first open systems engagement in a rapid insertion program for acoustic sonar technology.

The effort was the Navy’s first development project that involved the use of commercial technologies for military application, the report noted.

Guertin told Federal News Radio that the open systems approach is increasingly surfacing in more DoD contracts as a default base point, and has been used by the U.S. Army and U.S. Air Force.
