The Government Accountability Office (GAO) has found that the Department of Defense (DOD) fielded the MHS GENESIS electronic health record system in six of the 24 planned deployment sites and those actual deployments involved approximately 41,600 users.
Although DOD was able to enhance system performance and address issues encountered during the initial rollout of the EHR system, the department has yet to fully resolve incidents identified during testing, GAO said in a report published Monday.
According to the report, failure to address those identified incidents could result in challenges at future sites.
Lack of awareness of system changes “could hinder users' ability to effectively use the system, impede their knowledge of new workflows, and limit the utility of system improvements,” the report reads.
The congressional watchdog has recommended that the Pentagon come up with an approach to retesting the identified incidents to ensure that they have been addressed, improve the effectiveness of MHS GENESIS training and propose a plan to ensure that EHR system users are aware of changes to the platform.
