A spokesman for the Japanese government has said Prime Minister Shinzo Abe will ask President Barack Obama to implement strict policies to prevent crimes by U.S. troops and civilian workers at U.S. military bases in Japan, Reuters reported Monday.Kiyoshi Takenaka and Minami Funakoshi write the call for strict enforcement of measures at U.S. bases comes after the arrest of a U.S. civilian worker at the Kadena air base in Okinawa, Japan, in association with the murder of a 20-year-old Japanese woman.
Investigation into the alleged murder is still underway, according to the report.
“I expect [Abe] to ask President Obama to deal with the matter strictly, taking into account the Japanese people’s feelings,” spokesman Yoshihide Suga said.
Obama is scheduled to attend the Group of Seven summit in Japan and pay a visit to the city of Hiroshima to advance friendly relations with Japan, Takenaka and Funakoshi report.
