Rebecca Chavez, deputy assistant defense secretary for western hemisphere affairs, discussed the military-to-military relationship between U.S. and Mexico at a panel discussion at the Wilson Center in Washington, DoD News reported Tuesday.Jim Garamone writes Chavez indicated she wants to see more traditional military cooperation on top of other collaborations to combat transnational criminal networks.
Chavez noted that the Defense Department has worked with the Mexican Secretariat of National Defense and the Naval Secretariat in a push to develop long-term objectives as well as set the priority areas of engagement.
“I am very optimistic about the way ahead and the opportunity to further mature our defense relationship,†she added.
“Other potential areas of cooperation are Central America, and working together to strengthen the Inter-American Defense System.â€
